Ok working with a school that have to do things by the book.

They have XP Home on a laptop but need XP Pro. They have to go through the local city purchasing who no longer sell XP Pro. So am I right in saying

Buy a Vista Business licence and then downgrade to XP Pro? Shame they can’t just hit ebay, but there not allowed.

Cant they just privately purchse oem xp pro? the schools i work in can do that from the IT budget without any problem.

Thinking more about it, who told you its not possible for them to buy it themselves? i bet it was the secretary who cant be arsed with the paperwork :p

Ive had the same sort of thing told to me, yet when i talk to the local authority IT team im told "no they can just buy it out of *whatever* budget"
!!!

Are you working for them as an IT consultant or actually employed by the school? if the former just buy it yourself and invoice them as usual.

i'm just helping the school in a non paid format, i will see what i can do, i think the problem is the school closes tomorrow for summer.

I can't believe you can't get a copy of XP for education through their suppliers, but anyway, maybe this might clear things up in regards to downgrade.

Someone who has done it before might be able to give you a more concise answer. I take it just installing Vista business is not an option?

thanks mate, that link is great and sums up that it can be done, if it was me i would buy a licence for xp from whereever, but i think they can get a Vista Buss lic for £39 so no issues, just school politcs!
