I know this isn't necessarily a bike related question but hey ho !

My driving license photo-card ran out last year and I haven't bothered to renew it because....I feel I am being bent over and shafted !

When I got my license way back in 1997 I had the understanding that my license was valid until I reached ~70 and would then have to be assessed again.

I was forced to have a photo-card license when I moved house around 7 years ago otherwise I would still be paper only like a good few people I know still are.

What makes it worse is that couple of months before it ran out I passed my bike test. A WEEK before my photo-card expired I got my new license through with motorcycles added and that only had the remaining week left on it.

What an absolute load of steaming **** !

Is there anything I can do about it ?

You just send a new photo in. It's to do with the fact your photo is ten years out of date. You don't retake the tests or anything.

You can even go to some post offices and they'll take your photo and send off the forms for you. As One said, your photo has to be updated every 10 years.

I know but they charge ~£20.00 for what ?
It just infuriates me that this kind of stealing is legal.

Admin costs, processing costs, staff costs, IT systems, providing the equipment at post offices for the photos... Basic business running costs.

If we didn't pay £10 (£2 a year) for this, or the cost of getting a licence in the first place, or all the other fees - it'd come out the money we pay the government for taxes. Which would mean taxes would go up. The people at the DVLA don't work for free, and neither is the IT infrastructure to support it all.

Yeah £20 rip off fee, good job mines 10 years out of date, leave it as it is,no police station has pulled me up over it when I had to produce it

I don't want a photo-card license so why am i forced to pay for one.
Others I know don't have one and therefore have no need to pay extra.

But you want your license to have the motorcycle symbols on it where as the people you know with paper don't want this.

Besides a lot can change about someone's looks within 10years.

Non photocard licences are being phased out so that everyone will have photocards. This is to stop people pretending to be someone else and driving using someelse's licence

So for the sake of £20 you will risk a £1000 fine simply because a few cops of been lenient so far and you would advise others to do the same?

The annoying thing is the fact that the DVLA sent out a new licence with a week left on it after I passed my MC test.
Surely somebody could have said "hang on a minute, instead of sending this out with a week left on it which will be a massive waste of money/time/effort, we'll get him to send in a photo and issue the new licence instead".

My hatred for this aside, I am going to renew my licence and have kind of decided to grow the biggest ugliest beard and let my hair grow wild just for the photo, that way my photo won't really look like me anyway and will make me feel a bit better about it all.

I might not look exactly as I did 10 years ago but it's clear to see it's me !

I would rather pay the £20 every ten years than the grand fine if I get caught on someone's missus wasn't swallowing day.

If he can't justify 0.5p/day for a valid licence I suspect he probably isn't too bothered about tax and insurance either.

Hope none of these whingers ever need to apply for a passport, their heads would explode with the cost.

No they ain't, the current paper part of the UK licence will disappear from Jan 2015.

If you have an old paper licence it remains valid until it needs to be renewed.

Although the next time you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only.

(Sits stroking old paper licence :D)
