could someone give me a brief overview of this please. May well be joining the forces in the near future. Would i have to put in for say a minimum amount of time before anything would be paid out?looking at cover with direct line any helpl would be great!

I would have "thought" that joining the forces means you cannot apply for your normal, everyday "Life Insurance".
I think your new profession is possibly a little more risky than Joe Smith the account down the street
As for any delay in getting covered and being able to claim.
Nobody knows when they are going to need life insurance - if we did then we wouldn't take it out until 3 months before it was needed.
So there shouldn't be any kind of delay from you opening the policy until (hopefully not) somebody needs to make a claim.
It would probably only be a problem if you were claiming on Critical or Terminal illness as you then need to show you didn't know about such illness before the policy was taken out.
