I'm considering upgrading, but I can't decide if its worth trying to upgrade my cpu? 775 is obviously on the way out, so would i be wasting my money to upgrade to another 775 chip, or should i just go for i5, new motherboard and ram?

Reasons:
- Q8/9XXX series cpus aren't that much cheaper than i5 series chips.
- My ram (4 gig PC2-6400) would probably need to be upgraded along with the cpu
- existing motherboard doesn't support PCI-2. So if I want to upgrade my gpu down the road I would have to start from scratch then

So is it worth it? System is mostly for gaming.

Current setup is a E6600 @ 2.8ghz, 4gig DDR2 PC2-6400 with a GTS250.

What do you do with your computer? 775 is usually more than enough for what most people use their computers for. You only really need to upgrade if you're an enthusiast and like the fact your processor can give you a few more fps in games, make CPU intensive tasks complete a few seconds quicker or run a bit cooler.

I wouldn't upgrade unless you can find a cheap one, and unfortunately as the sockets dead those that are around on the 2nd hand market cost more than they used to now.

I'll be waiting for sandybridge and seeing if I could get much gain over my q6600 personally. It's still ticking over rather nicely.

If you can, hold out for a little while longer :).

Hi there, may I ask what motherboard and cooling are you currently using?

So long as these are half decent, a cheap upgrade to a Q6600 G0 stepping (cost around £75 second-hand) and sell your E6600 (for ~£30) and you will be paying ~£45 for the upgrade to a quad core (which games are finally making use of).

Absolutely.

It's dead only in the sense that no more 775 chips/mobo apart from the select few low end parts are being made anymore. But it's still a decent performer.

What motherboard? E6600 is decent and if you can push it further to say 3.4/3.6Ghz, which it is capable of you might find there's no need to upgrade afterall.

Have a look on MM or Flea bay for a Q6600/Q6700. I upgraded from E6600 to my current quad and it does everything I need it to until I look into Sandybridge next year.

The Golden Rules:

Have I got the most I can get out of my current hardware?

Is my current hardware giving me low fps, which is ruining my enjoyment of games?

If your machine is performing well, there is no need to upgrade. Resist the urge.

personally im waiting for sandy then upgrading then to either sandy or an i5/i7 which would hopefully be that little bit cheaper. i dont mind being 1/2 gens behind especially when the q6600 is still a great chip despite its age.
but i would like 2x 6870s in CF and for that i need to upgrade.

I'd get a Q6600 and use it for as long as you can stand. Until Sandybridge has landed and the prices have settled at least.

I am still using a GA P35-DS4 with a [email protected] with low temps.
Until Intel brings out a CPU that will blast it out the water I won't upgrade.

amen

I used to be an "enthusiast" in my younger days but now in my mid 30's the need for e-peen swinging just doesn't appeal. There's not a game I can't play on my rig so I'm happy to stick with 775 for another year yet and by then I'll have had 9550 chip 3 years which is usually upgrade time anyway.

a 6600 chip will keep you ticking over easily for a while yet and if you're still getting over 40fps then why bother spending money unless for e-peen bragging rights??

I keep meaning to upgrade my E6750 to an E8400, but I just don't think it's worth it. I have 2xGTX260s, 6GB PC2-6400 RAM, 680i motherboard and my E6750 OC'd to 3.2Ghz yet New Vegas is stuttery and laggy at 1920x1200 on max.

I just don't think it would be worth upgrading my CPU, I'm gonna push my CPU to about 3.5Ghz and do a whole system overhaul in the new year :)
