Lifting objects from a background image

I use Gimp 2.6 to cut out objects from an image using paths. I have been looking at Serif Draw Plus, which claims to have a smart tool to lift objects from images automatically. I assume other applications like Photoshop have such advanced tools too. Are these tools as easy to use in practice as they sound ?

Very much depends on the image - smooth lines, object and background textures etc. Things like hair really throw these tools as there's a gradient of texture.
