Anyone have a special way of lifting the engine without a hoist?

i have good access to it, with it being the spitfire bonnet opening is huge and engine is minus cylinder head gearbox and all ancilaries, so how can i pluck it out?

remove the car around it? when my engine was swapped, they lifted the car over it instead (undid the subframe), i imagine the shell will be lighter on your car?

Haha, I tried this at the weekend and failed dismally (putting an engine in rather than taking one out) I tried creating a stack of bricks, using a trolley jack but it's just too damn awkward. Ended up taking it all back out and I'm buying a hoist this week.

I take it you can't drop the engine out of the bottom? Lower it down and raise the car over it - on a RWD though I expect the crossmember gets in the way.

I'm taking a lump out my other SJ sometime real soon, maybe this week maybe the next. I was thinking of rigging up some kind of A frame & using my winch. All sounds a bit mental though so i will probably try to borrow (flutters eye lids) a mates Hoist. I think there is a mate or two in Hinckley i can get one though tbh.
If you can't borrow a Hoist then Hire one, They'll even deliver & you'll be surprised how cheap it is for the day. Just get it totally stripped down prior to getting the hoist & have a decent trolley to put it on to. They take the hoist back, you do the work needed & prep it prior to re ordering the hoist for another day.
You can man handle them in & out on some motors though depending how much of the front of the car you can remove. I could just cut the front off mine as i am scrapping whats left anyways. Main thing with all engines though is strip them as much as possible before moving them.

How much do you reckon the assembly weighs?

You could rig up a pulley system to lift it if you can get it under something stout like a tree or a beefy structural crossbeam.

Any time mate, I'll let you know when I've chosen one, I missed the last Machine Mart VAT free day which is annoying - and Makro had a load in cheap but have sold out

When I took the engine out of the Mk2 Escort I tried lifting it with a large bit of wood over the shoulders of myself and my step-dad, but that didn't really work.

I then dropped down the entire front subframe/suspension, and just lifted the shell over the engine (with a couple of you on it, it weighs a helluvalot less than when the engine/gearbox is in! ;))

When I took the engine out of the Anglia a few days later, I did the same thing.

However when I took the engine out of my Prelude, I used a hoist, and it was so much easier! ;)

Can't you hire a cherry-picker? That seems like the most sensible option. Most places around here will loan such hoists for free, with just a refundable deposit on the equipment.

You can lift out the SJ engine with your hands, there is no weight to it at all, there's barely any engine to lift! :p

Engine assembly probably only weighs 80-90kg in the minimalised state its in.

Lifting car over is def a no no chassis isnt wide enough and there is a crossmember and steering rack in the way.

This is the engine position to show how much room i have.

obv bonnet and rad come out but gearbox stays in.

this was a long time ago and engine is totally stripped just now.

I hired an engine hoist at the weekend from HSS for about 30 quid (Saturday morning until monday afternoon). However I'm thinking of buying my own soon as I didn't complete the work thanks to beer and rain and I'll definitely have more use for one in the future.

I have the same block in my midget and it weighs an absoloute ton! It's cast iron so not the lightest of things. I can only just lift the head without doing myself an injury.

It's one hell of a lot easier to get it out a spitfire than a midget though. You could always buy a hoist and sell it again. I ended up buying one as it's £30 for a couple of days hire and I would need it twice combined with the going to collect it. I got one off the bay for £120 delivered in the end.

you are kidding i've changed the head hundreds of times and it weighs nothing. engine block i've only lifted a 1300 with gearbox and 3 of us managed to lift it. But that was with head etc.

Cheapest hoist i could find was £150.

here's my plan.
assuming the front of the car is stripped off.

jack the whole front of the car as high as you can get it.
put a stout timber across the top of the engine between two supports, tressles or some concrete blocks stacked up.
tie the engine to the wooden cross member.
lower the car back down and wheel it out of the way.

what you do with the engine then i have no idea.

alternatively use a block and tackle.

a lot cheaper than an engine hoist, but you still need something to suspend it from.

£80-£90 on a few ebay shops brand new.

Get really annoyed about something.

I managed to lift the engine block out of my old rover like this. Failing that, a sturdy bar tied to the engine with a person at each end.
