For lappy with xp pro, 600mhz p3, 128mb ram, 8mb rage gfx...

Basicly I need a low ram MSN program, this newest current one uses between 20 and 90 mb .

Also if there is one, perhaps a lite version of skype??

Need a low ram using browser, firefox 1?

And a lite flash player would be nice, some flash stuff stutters, need some kind of decoder for flash wich needs less cpu power... (flash player for browser offcourse)

Lappy will be cept free of AV etc... for speed.

Also what's a good media player, wmp uses too much resources on the lappy, and from my dads a64 with 512 mb ram, I can renember winamp also starting very slowly.

And finally, a good codec pack? Using klite codec pack on my own but it messes up all .avi's for wmp, prefer one that is more ''compatible'' with everything...

Would like all apps im askinf for to use 10 mb max, prefferably under 5, really just got 50 mb of free ram to play with, and pagefile on a 6 year old hdd is slow as hell...

codec - ffdshow
player (video) - mplayerc
player (audio) - winamp lite

nliteos.com (use this tool to strip components from the xp pro disc, it'll run like a dream compared to normal)

i'd invest in some more ram, another 256 will really make it fly

no need for a codec pack kill two birds with one stone and get VLC light weight media player and codec pack built in to one program.

but to be honest you would be better running some version of linux on that hardware as 128mb of ram is no where near enough to keep windows happy.

Hmm, is there such a program for after install, really don't feel like reinstalling all those classic game's again.

Also coming frop a laptop noob, what kind of ram should I be looking at and where to put it in?
Lappy is a Compaq armanda e500, the 128mb ram & 600 mhz cpu version...

You mean an nLite equivalent for post install? Don't think there is a tool that can change the Windows install once you've installed it. Unless you mean something like http://www.autopatcher.com/.

As for RAM, try out Crucial.com. They have a memory checker so you just tell it the brand of PC and the model and it'll show you the correct compatible memory.

foobar2000 > winamp fyi

Agreed, foobar2000 is ******' brilliant. Tiny and the tagging and file management is second to none once you get used to it. Only thing is lacks is the snazzy UI of some other players, but this is an advantage IMHO.

Can't go wrong with VLC + foobar2000

yeah, xplite, but its not free (and not as good as nlite) -windows installs way faster after you've nlited it anyway

use cpu-z to find the type of ram you have

Shame about that there's no nLite equiv for post install...

Ram is a bit of a prob, E500 isn't listed, then ewest is E700 listed @ crucial, That has SD-ram, now, i have a lot of unused 128 and 64 mb pc133 sd-ram modules, would they work ok in the lappy ?
Also how can you put em in, as I've said before, I have no idea of the intestants of a lappy and have no clue where to put ram...

EDIT: new post...

Will look into XPlite, thx for suggesting...

EDIT 2, Cpu-z says sdram also, also just 100 mhz (cas2) so i now just need to know where can I put this extra ram I have in the lappy, as still got at least 4 modules of sd-ram lying around somewhere...

Bledd has mentioned XPLite but I'd rather nLite I think.

As bledd has said use the CPU-Z tool.

And turn the laptop upside down. Should be a hatch somewhere. Take a look at your laptop manual or look on the maker's site for a PDF. That should tell you where the RAM is kept.

you must know all it takes is a little (ok a lot of) effort to make it look good. i just pinched these images from the foobar appearance thread at hydrogenaudio. :)

Dont have it, lappy from a company that replaced them recently with newer ones, as a result they were giving them away for 30 quid... Don't have any manuals... Compaq has been taken over by HP so dont know :( .

As for a hatch, there are 2:

Wich one is it you think?

Edit: Checked the bottom right one of the 2, no luck, Found a Hitachi travelstar under bay number one, ahwell leaves 1 bay to try out :p .

EDIT 2: Ugh  , no luck either, was surprised to see a kind of cooler covering 2 chips there :( .

Where do lappy's usually have their Ram so I know hwere to look?

I had an E500 The ram go under the keyboard.

If u need to get at the ram take out the screw in the centre the back the pull back the small cilps round the keyboard it should then lift off exposing the ram
