Seriously foggy out there this morning, in and around my town, 20 meters at best i'd say.
To all those driving in such conditions, i implore you to turn your fog lights on especially if you're in a silver/white car, or at least some sort of light.
To my amazement there are cars out there with no lights on at all, absolute flipping idiots. Yes, i'm talking to you, BMW business ******* (generalisation) and doddery old farts. The lights on your cars are not only for you to see in the dark, but for others to see you when visibility is poor.

Seriously though, it baffles me, it really does. Some people seem have no idea and just jump in their 320d company car (generalisation) in the morning, take the same route, need to get to work, don't have a care for anything/anyone around them.

It can't just be me that's noticed this seem to be the case with many (mainly "business") commuters?

Quite, I think I saw less fog lights on this morning than I normally do when there's visibility for miles!

Perhaps another case of too much technology?

Automatic headlights are pretty good at detecting night-time but may not respond well to detecting fog/etc

People who get used to having a machine think for them all the time end up losing the ability to think for themselves! :-/

Would you moan and complain at me who had no fog lights? In 7 yesrs of driving I have not needed them, maim beam has been sufficient. When visibility is low my real fog is on.

Front fog lights are intended to help you see the road in front of you
Rear fog lights are for rear visibility

?

Possibly, but the automatic head lights on my car do not activate the fogs its one of those old fashioned twisty button things!

Thats my point. I have not needed front fogs in 7 years. This is living quite high up. My rear is used as its a bit brighter than the normal red it emits.

Now the amount of idiots using fogs instead of main beams is another story. Some you see with just those on or both main and fog in a clear night.

Far more idiots with thoes on when not needed.

Can we have that in English?

You don't have fog lights but you do?

No. Both are intended to make your car more visible to others. Hence why front fogs aren't standard fit on all cars, because headlights make them redundant.

Also, I sympathise with the op, same experience for me this morning. And the point about auto lights probably explains it. I know I had to switch on mine manually today.

Ha sorry. Silly phones and there small keyboards :)

Basically my car has no fog lights but but in 7 years of driving in various cars some of which have had fog lights the main beam has been sufficient.

Some cars like mine won't let you activate the rear fog without the front fogs also coming on.
Also, main beam isn't really a suitable replacement for foglights as you can all dazzle other drivers. ..I assume you mean headlights?

Oh look a bit of low level cloud.

Quick full beam an fogs to the go go!!!! Which is dangerous as you cannot see when they dazzle you goimg past.

Main beam and Full beam?

Main beam used normally and Full to see an unlit country road?

Have I got the terminology wrong?

What I find ridiculous is the sheer number of cars that drive around in the middle of the day with their fogs on, yet when they're needed, hardly any bugger has them on, often with no headlights at all.

My biggest bugbear is when a driver knows full well that one of their headlights is out and so, to compensate for this, they use their fogs. It doesn't take much to change a bulb (both cost or time) and I'm surprised that this happens a lot on cars that are less than 2 years old.

To gauge the truth of your question/statement. Only one of those is a legal requirement based on its effectiveness.....

I was going to make my own thread about this, literally couldn't see more than 20 feet this morning and people go past with no lights on... none... at all, and when I flashed them to tell them to stop being idiots (yes yes I know...) I get a random blank stare back.

So on my 12 mile commute I saw 3 people with no lights on, easily 15+ with simply sidelights on, and 1 with full beams on, a big Volvo SUV that blinded the crap out of me.

People are idiots.

People who join the motorway slip road at 26mph and only achieve 40mph by the end of the sliproad when they join lane 1 are particularly useless, especially with no fogs on its offers a pretty significant speed differential for the existing road uses to deal with as they collect the car..... fortunatley for them I guess it was a Metro so they might crack a number plate if anything did happen :P
