Lightbox effect - Like it or not?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Not another Lightbox user!

If you are just using the default settings then definitely no, and even if you are going to change them I personally can't stand lightbox! Annoys the hell out of me for some reason and I know it does the same to a few of my friends

I really like it - it means you don't have to navigate off and then back to that page or open and close a tab. It also tends to make photos look better than they otherwise would.

I really like it - why not?

Personally I like the effect too, and do appreciate it when I'm on a site that uses it appropriately.

it may be one of those things that quickly becomes passe.
For web developers I think it already has; it's quite an old effect now in terms of design fads. However, it's not yet got heavy use in the wild (though I did see it on fender.com recently), so I think it's still got a very good 'wow' factor if you're trying to appeal to the mass market, and definitely a worthwhile asset to an image-heavy/gallery site.

Generally annoying, but in the right context it's preferable to linking directly to an image.

Don't use it for a blog, unless a photolog with minimal text.

3-5 images per article is a lot. Combine that with the 2 second click -> animation -> image load nature of Lightbox, and irritation ensues.

That is SO much better!

I personally hate lightbox as you have to wait while the pointless animation plays, ie window stretching out to full size and then the picture loading and then you have to click a certain area to close the image.

The one Sic mentioned is far better and I'd even think of using something like that myself

The lightbox effect doesn't take any longer than the loading time on those other images. At least not on the sites I have seen it on. I.e. 2 seconds.

yes, but the one I posted allows you to navigate between photos using arrow keys and cancel navigation using escape. last time I checked, lightbox didn't do that?

Some Lightbox implementations seem to allow the x key as a cancellation, but it's hit-and-miss. Either way, Lightbox is annoying when multiple images are in tow, and your link is more graceful in this situation.

No, it can do this. It also allows you to display capitions, if required. In fact the only difference I can tell is the one you posted is touch less special effect-y. Load time and functionality seem exactly the same to me.

Edit: Oh, except you can't drag the pictures around the screen with lightbox.

it must be a while since I've used lightbox - last time it just popped the picture up and greyed out the background
