Lighting tips???

I have said to my wife that I could take a better photograph of my baby daughter than the ones that she has paid for but am having some trouble with lighting.

As I am poor with a new baby could anyone recommend a good way of getting rid of shadows with just around the house lighting?

Its too wet and cold to take pictures out side.

Lighting tips in general would be nice or somewhere to read about them.

I am only armed with a cannon 350D

I used the natural light and got some nice shots. Being a noob is it better to have the light coming from behind me? How do I insert an image on here?
