LightningUsenet - €3 Unlimited Usenet

Anyone heard/use this company?

Retention is only 431 days but for under 3 quid a month I might take a punt at this....

Give it a go, although check what the completion is like. Also, there might well be speed variations at that price; if you've a server on 24/7 then you might not really care - but if you're downloading NOW to do something ASAP it might become frustrating.

They're based in Hong Kong but have an EU (Amsterdam) server. Not sure who they resell though(?). From what I've heard their support is patchy, and you may have to set your location to Belgium rather than UK if you want to use PayPal.

Beware the 50Mbps cap and only 8 connections (you'll likely need more than that to hit 50+ Mbps consistently, especially under Windows). Worth a punt for £3, but personally I wouldn't bother.

I have just signed up after seeing this thread. I'm on 10Mbit and the speeds are solid. Can't really say much as I have only had it for 5 mins but it seems good so far.

Also the prices are even cheaper if you pay more in advance, 100 days for €8.50 or 410 days for €32.

Well you can get free newsgroup access if you look around, so I'm always wondering why people bother paying for it...

If you mean IPv6 then they tend to be spotty, and low on retention. If you're desperate you could always spam the Hitnews free trial tbh. :p

Personally I have Astraweb and Giganews, with Blocknews as backup. Invincible. :D

Why have accounts with multiple providers when each advertises 99% completion?

It still amazes me that people pay $25/month+ with Giganews

I don't. I get Giga much cheaper than that (old, old customer - special deal lol). They're great but they do have terrible losses due to DMCA. Not saying much more due to the policy on OcUK. Suffice to say that Astraweb comes in handy, but due to its difficulty providing me 50Mbps 24/7, I stick with Giga for my main account, using Astra for fills. ;)

I guess lots of Giganews subscribers must be on similar deals then; paying $25/month when the same service — if not better, with regards to the recent DMCA issues — can be had from Astraweb for $11/month or $8/month on a 12-month contract is nuts! I always thought Giganews' pricing policy was terribly brazen.

Might not be able to max out 50Mbps 24/7 with Astraweb, but that'll rarely be a problem with Astraweb itself; more likely congestion on the links between their servers and you at peak times. Either way, major downloads should be scheduled overnight anyway ;)

Giga has actually gone up to $34.99 for new customers now. As for Astra I doubt it's really congestion or routing really, as Giga has a server in the same place and gives me 6.32MB/sec 24/7/365. :)

I pay $30 :D

The money isn't really an issue, the service is excellent, retention is excellent and the additional features have now come in to their own.

Giga <3
Fair enough, but I certainly wouldn't pay that much!

$11/month with Astraweb gives me essentially identical service, retention, and arguably better completion. If you're referring to VyprVPN as one of the additional features, I run my own VPN service (as well as a bunch of other useful stuff) for the princely sum of $7/month :D

Hmmm, I think I will wait for a few more reviews tbh, my £7/mo subscription with Astraweb seems much better to be honest.

Is it safe enough to use your real name and address to sign up for this? Or is it ok to use fake details? I guess once you pay using paypal they will have your real details anyway. Thoughts?

Cheers,

For just using it like everyone else, downloading etc, I wouldn't worry. There's nothing illegal in it anyway, unlike with uploading, and NSPs don't keep logs. If someone wanted your retail details they'd soon find them regardless.

TL;DR, unless you are setting up a criminal uploading account to distribute Hollywood blockbusters (this is bad, mmkay?) then you don't need to panic. ;)
