Lightroom DNG - who uses it?

Been looking into using the DNG format.

From what I understand this converts the RAW to DNG and deletes the original RAW file.

I am unclear though whether editing a DNG in Lightroom changes the source file or not?

Obviously with RAW, the source never gets modified, but some articles I have seen possibly suggest with DNG that edits are actually saved to the file rather than a catalog.

The edits to the raw are saved within the file (rather than in the xmp sidecar files) but its just info relating to the changes meaning you can just reset the changes in lightroom / cameraraw. I used to use DNG files for my film scans from vuescan.
