Hi all, Ive been scanning these forums for a while and think it's about time I started my first build.

My laptop is doing my duster in big style. I use lightroom and play around with video editing ocassionaly and my current 4yr old i3 laptop can barely play the videos from my dslr and lightroom can be stickly and slow to say the least.

I’d like a machine that will handle lightroom and minor video editing much more comfortably. Other than that the build will be mainly used for streaming video and browsing the net etc.

Im not a gamer and as lightroom doesn’t use GPU I don’t think that’s really necessary? I suppose if I got into video editing more seriously later I could always add a GPU.

I’ve got keyboard and mouse but will need OS (8.1 I guess?) and a half decent monitor for photography purposes – I was thinking AOC Q2770PQU 27inchcould be good (open to advice on the monitor if anyone has any other ideas, I like the idea of 1440 res)

I would say my total price would be around 1200ish.

So far all I was really thinking was perhaps 4690K with z97 bundle(0r would I really benifit with the I7?) 240GB ssd, 2TBHDD, something like the bitfenix ronan tower case perhaps, not sure if 8 or 16GB RAM would be better for my purposes. Id like quite a quiet build as it will be set up in my bedroom most likely!

Thanks

Jonathan

Thanks for that. I remember the samsung evo 840 used to get good reviews...would it be worth paying a little more for this?

I like the case but not keen on a b grade one. Perhaps there are other antec ones p280 maybe or similar. i'll check them out.

If i was to push the price to £1200 do you think there would be any worth while upgrades? I forgot i'd need some kind of dvd drive to load windows etc. nothing fancy.

thanks again

The EVO is a better SSD but is more costly, for the money the MX100 is a quality unit. :)

Yeah, B grade isn't great, the P280 is a good choice just a bit pricier than the P100.. :)

If he's going for a 1440p monitor surely it would be a good idea to have a dedicated GPU in the system?

No, Intel on board HDMI supports upto 4k resolution, so if he's not doing any GPU intensive work (which he won't be for a while) it will be fine.

Though i would suggest adding a cheap one later if you start to go for graphical. :)

there's only a tenner between those two bundles so if the gigabyte one is better i'll just get that one and even if the cashback never came through i'd not lose much sleep over it.

could someone recommend (link :) )a cheapish dvd drive, bearing in mind it will probably only be used a handfull of times after initially installing windows?

finally, the cases things seems to be a bit of a minefield! are there any other brands or recommendations people have for a fairly quiet case that wont break the bank? maybe up to around £75 or so? just so i can check them out without scrolling through too many.

I was thinking more along the lines that if he's doing CPU intensive tasks surely this would effect the cpu's ability drive the display, or the other way around?

Hi, i may upgrade to a gpu sometime so think ill stick with 550w. I did see in another thread that the leads on these superflowers can be quite short? is it worth buying extensions at the same time as I do the other build components (tonight)? or is it normally a case of build and see how it goes and see if I will need extenders once i start...
