Hi all, been using LR for a good few months now, however I have filled my main hdd and need to transfer all my shots across, sounds easy... but here we go!

I transfer from SD card to my hdd into 'my pictures' folder, then only import to LR what I want to edit. So out of thousands of shots I only hold about 1k in LR.

So the plan is to install a 1tb drive later, copy all 'my pictures' folder to it, then what happens will be LR will loose all the links to the imported shots I guess. So what do I do to sort it out?

I don't want to do it then realize I will loose all my edits etc

If you right click on a folder in Lightroom, there is an option to "Update folder location". I've always used this when moving files from drive to drive. So basically when you get your new drive, copy the My Pictures folder to it. Then in Lightroom use the "Update folder location" in Lightroom (right click on the My Pictures folder), then select the new location on the 1TB drive.

Ok next question... still related though. In 'my pictures' folder, I have a folder called 'Lightroom', inside that there are folders called 'Backups', 'Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata', 'Lightroom 4 Catalog Previews.lrdata' and then icons for LR 3 and 4 Catalogs.

They will have been copied over to the new drive as I just copied and pasted the whole of my Pics folder over. Can delete this folder? What are these folders for?
