I'm always looking for ways to improve my Lightroom workflow so thought I'd start a thread where people can share their workflow and their issues and maybe pick up some tips from other peoples too.

Mine is based on Weddings only and goes like this :

At the moment I create a new catalog for each Wedding. I like this system and understand that I could have a 2014 catalog instead but as there are two of us that do the editing and album designs, its important that we can both work on individual Weddings at the same time.

My current workflow :

  • Import images to specific wedding catalog
  • Flag images for client viewing using 'P'
  • Create Collection called 'viewing' and put all flagged images in
  • Client viewing - use star ratings to determine their favourites and to help me with the album design process
  • Create smart collection for different star ratings 3* to 5* (3* : chosen groups/formals, 4* : Client likes, 5* : absolute favourites, make feature of these
  • Create 'CD' collection and place 3*, 4* & 5* photos inside

My only issue is, editing an image in one collection changes it in all the other too. Not something I come across very often but for example I had to crop a shot for a Wedding Fayre frame I wanted to put up. This meant that the image was now cropped in all of the above collections. I still haven't found a way of using virtual copies that isn't messy and leaves me with loads of copies in my original folder.

It's not something I do and don't know if this helps but.. when selecting all the photos to create the new collection you check 'create virtual copies' to create all the copies (I'm guessing you've tried this) - after that you can then use the icons in the top right of the 'attribute' filter to filter out all the virtual copies when viewing the original folder.

I've seen that this morning. Never noticed that I could filter out virtual copies before, this could be the solution I was after thanks :)
