Good plug in but photoshop is never going to be put on the side. Its powerful in so many ways. It just isn't always needed to adjust photographs. I always sharpen my images in photoshop though.
Arent most/all of the controls in lightroom for RAW withing CS3 now anyway? I tried LR for a while but went back to PS as it had the tools I needed from LR but more power for extra things.
Having said that PS is a god among software, it's done most of my dissertation for me, from photos, logs and mapmaking. It's just brilliant.
I prefer high pass harpening as it puts the sharpening on a seperate layer, making the whole thing more flexible;
1. Duplicate the image layer.
2. Desaturate the new layer.
3. Apply high pass filter so that the detail comes through.
4. Set the blending mode of the sharpening layer to vivid light.
5. Apply a layer mask to the sharpening layer.
6. Invert the layer mask with ctrl+I.
7. Now brush in the areas you want sharpening with a white brush.
8. Change the blending mode to soft light or reduce the opacity for a subtler effect.
You can save all of this as an action so you only have to click on one button for it to go through the process.
