Lightweight avi file player

I am using Windows Media Player to play AVI files. Are there any lighter, less resource intensive players out there?

One reason is that it plays AVI files when I first reboot my PC. But after a few days, as resources drop. it plays the AVI file so I get the audio but not the video. Grr!

Do you tend to use VLC or MPClassic instead of Windows Media Player and if so, why?

I've just installed VLC and when I double click my AVI file, I get a message saying the avi file is broken and needs repairing. I clicked yes, it repaired it and voila, its working!

WMP never gave me such an option.
