Right now I'm using Media Player Classic and XP Search, dropping files into MPC.

XP Search sucks; It takes forever to drag MP3 files from XP Search into MPC. I only drag 10 files at a time but Explorer always runs at 100% for a while before dropping them to MPC - the same on my laptop

Any recommendations for a non-memory-hog app for XP?

Foobar 2000, awesome low res mp.

Winamp, with the classic skin. But even with the Modern skin, Winamp has a small footprint on my system. :cool:

Think I've used Winamp since 1999, and I won't go back TBH.

I use both. But Foobar uses less resources but neither hog them like Windows media player does, or at least used to.

Great stuff, guys. I'll try out Foobar and Music cube. I've used them before but I couldn't remember the names.

Winamp has given me little or no issues in all of the years I've used. I too have used it since around 99/2000... only once or twice have I ever been mad at it because something has gone wrong.

It's very lightweight, huge userbase and devbase, huge amounts of mods/skins etc...

My MediaCentre machine with Vista on it is infact the first machine I've built in around 7 years that doesn't have Winamp on it :eek:

Hear hear! I've used Winamp for years and although I've now found better CD ripping progs I still use it for media playback and its database features. I've not found a program that has a better database than Winamp that I can get to grips with.

Foobar all the way, i got so bored of winamp a while ago so gave it a try and its so good. Kinda feels like an open source app as well (even though its not which is a shame) in that you can customise it in any way you want with plugins. You can also integrate it into the shell commands so you just right click on a folder and add it to playlist. It has certainly improved they way i use my computer.

Also more to the question at hand, it uses almost no resources at all

I drifted away to MediaMonkey for a while (as it kept a searchable database of your library before Winamp did) but I'm currently back to Winamp with the 'Kalak' skin.

Actually, I think I'm going to go give MediaMonkey a try again. It was great for organising music.

Like some people above I've been using Winamp since late'98/early'99 and haven't really seen any need to change. I don't install modern skin support or the agent. Back then there wasn't really that many mp3 players around, in fact on IRC people would say that you 'needed' winamp to play them.

I tend to be a bit conservative in terms of sticking with software I'm used to, even though nowadays there are probably better players around. For example I've used the following apps for at least 5 years and most of them since the 90s:

Audio player = Winamp
Archiver = Winrar (just started messing around with 7-zip this week - looks good)
FTP Client = FlashFXP
Burning = Nero
Browser = IE
Movie player = WMP
Chat = mIRC
Email = Outlook
Imaging = PSP (my ancient edition 7!)
HTTP Download manager = Getright (definitely need to find something better)
