My D610 and sigma 50-150 slipped off my hand and fell down whilst on holiday from around hip level. "Thankfully" the lens snapped as below and camera was ok.

Damage appears to be a loose connection and snapped screws on the casing. The barrels for distance and focus rotate fine and no evident damage to glass.

I will send to Sigma for a quote if likely to be repairable.

I had a 50-500 and they said they could fix that one. It had broken the casting where the back segment of the lens joined in what seems to be a similar way. I think they quoted a price to investigate and then that come off the repair price if you took it.

Well, they turned around a quote within 24h of receiving it. It will be £146 including VAT, which was higher than I hoped but still cheaper than the lens's value of £275-£300. I will think about it for a few days but I think I will get it repaired.

That's a cheap fix, my 24-70mm 2.8 has a slight grinding when changing focal length, think the known repair for it is over £500.

Might be worth looking at camera insurance for such things, sure it could be quite cheap annually for general out and about, think my professional is only £80

Ouch!

Re camera insurance - it was typical. For the last 6 years, I have been with Photoguard, and never had to make a claim. I forgot to renew it end of last year, and typically, a few weeks later, I dropped the lens!
