I've just withdrawn £100 from my Nochex account yesterday, and today I've received an email from the "Compliance Team" saying my account has been suspended, pending receipt of a few documents.

They have also frozen the transfer of this £100.

They are requesting 2 of any of the following:
* Original Utility Bill (mobile telephone bills are not acceptable).
* Original Mortgage Statement.
* Original Bank Statement.
* Original Credit Card Statement.
* Original Inland Revenue Tax Notification or if self employed, SC60 or equivalent.
* Original Local Authority Council Tax Bill (for current tax year)

AND one of:

* An original bank statement dated within the last 3 months
* A blank cheque (crossed void or cancelled)
* A Pre-printed paying in slip (crossed void or cancelled)

AND they claim they have to be originals, and cannot be photocopies?

They have given no reason for this to me.

Where do I stand? Surely this is a bit messed up, especially since they're asking for an original copy of my bank statement? :confused:

It's not a scam. It is a genuine Nochex email, and has asked me to send the details to the listed Nochex address on Companies House. Have even emailed Nochex itself for confirmation and they say exactly the same thing.

Have you logged in to your account, using your normal web link, to see what it has to say there?

I'd be leary of any email notifications from banking companies. They normally do not ever request any information via email. This smells like phish to me.

Does seem a little suspicious that they are asking for two of the top items, if your living with your parents you would have only a bank statement and none of the others. They would know that.

When I try to log on, it does say my account is no longer active.

Looks like a standard fraud protection alert to me (as you've already verified and confirmed the source). You'll find it all covered in the T&C's of the service.

Have you changed your usage pattern for NoChex or similar? That's usually the sort of thing that triggers it.

Assuming you're happy you've verified the sender, I'd get the documents sent to get the £100 back, and if you're really that unhappy about them providing fraud protection, move to another online payment provider.

I've not used my account once other than to receive a £100 payment from an OcUK member. If that is fraudulent, who knows.

Reading their T&C's, the only reason they may close my account according to them is:

Nochex said:
2.4 We may close your account immediately if at any time we reasonably think that:-

2.4.1 You have given us any false information in connection with any Nochex account;

2.4.2 Your account is being or has been used illegally (by you or by someone else); or

2.4.3 You have been in persistent breach of these conditions.

2.4.2 and 2.4.3 obviously do not apply, and I'd like to know why suddenly out of the blue they'd claim I have given false information (which I haven't) simply because I have received money.

I can assure you the payment I made wasn't fraudulent! They've taken the money off my card!
There must be a telephone number you can ring somewhere? There must be a human manning one of their phones.

Are you on the electoral roll at your registered address? With regards to 2.4.2, that's what they've asked for proofs to verify for some reason, especially as it's an account that's not been used for anything other than this fairly large money transfer.

Why don't you want to just verify the information and move on?

Sounds like standard fraud checks to me. I've had to fax a bank statement to OcUK before before they'd let me purchase a PC.

No, 16 year olds are not on the electoral roll.

I fail to see how standard fraud prevention means I have to send them pieces of information I cannot possibly have, including ORIGINAL copies of private information, before I am allowed my money back when they have not even given me a reason.

Would you prefer it if they allowed anyone to potentially use your details without any attempt at verification or protection?

Verification has long since been done. I don't expect to have to send bank statements and council tax forms in every time I want to receive money.

Either way, Trading Standards/Consumer Direct have advised me not to send them anything other than notice of intention to take it to court unless the money is made available to me within 7 days.
