Lilo & Stitch

Ooh looking forward to this. One of my favourite Disney films by a long shot. Was glad when it clicked with my daughter

I'm going to tag @SixTwoSix in this thread as he'll be interested.

I was late to the party, not seeing L&S until 2008, but I then immediately became obsessed with it. Had all 4 films on DVD. Blu-ray of the 1st film took aaaaaaaaaaages to come out. Not until 2015ish! Then 2 TV series that you can watch on Disney+ totalling about 65 episodes. Also got loads of figurines of both characters, numerous pins and other merch of the duo.

At Disneyland Paris, October 2018, there was a Stitch meet-and-greet near the main park's entrance. I noticed him and so queued up for a spot, but I was too late as he was finishing for the day, being around 17:00ish. EVEN THOUGH I WAS WEARING A STITCH T-SHIRT!!!1 (all caps rage!)

In Merry Hill, March 2024, there was a cafe themed to Stitch which was awesome. I complimented the staff, although this theme was only for 1 month and it would change to another theme in the next month.

Nice trailer. Short, but pretty much straight to the point :p

Looking forwards to seeing what the aliens look like and how they're animated (if not real people) e.g. Gantu, Pleakly, Grand Councilwoman etc, and then Lilo, Nani and Cobra Bubbles will be real.
 
Nice to finally see what Lilo looks like as a live action version. Her voice isn't far off from her cartoon counterpart, and Stitch is spot on because he's the same voice actor in both versions. Also, nice to see the running gag of the fat dude constantly losing his ice cream.
 
23rd May (UK release date) is just around the corner, so it's cheeky thread bump time :-)

This remake was announced years ago, probably pre-COVID, slated for a 2024 release, then it got delayed by a year due to a fire in one of their studios/buildings that destroyed some of the props. This is my most highly anticipated film since Ralph Breaks The Internet in 2018.
 
@Pawnless Endgame I want to be excited for this (and we've had conversations about Pixar and Disney face to face, back when you were the artist formerly known as Monserrat.) I'm a massive fan of animation as a media in general, and 3D CGI in particular.... but.... this just seems so redundant. Lilo and Stitch is amazing as it is. It doesn't *need* a remake.
It's like if someone colourised Citizen Kane. Sure, it would still be a great film, but why would there be any need to do that.
But even so, I still hope it's good, and fun, and makes me laugh as much as the original did.
 
Love the original, really good story and beautiful execution made possible by animation/hand drawn amazingness.
It just...looks odd, why does it need to exist. The aliens look very out of place and cannot suspend disbelief as unlike the original they don't fit with the rest of the shot.
Jumba and Pleakley just having human device thingys is just stupid it deletes a charming aspect of the movie.
 
Have any of you ever taken a child to a movie before. Would love to take my 3 year old as she is obsessed with Stitch. I’m sure there must be some children friendly screenings at cinemas?

Yea, just Google it, they have set screenings for parents & young children.

Eg. Showcase is Mon & Thurs, first screenings.

It generally just means it's more forgiving for noise, chatter and disruption etc.

Unless you are talking about a more sensory environment, ie: quieter, then there are screenings for those too.

I remember meeting you a few times in the early 2010s with my friend Andy and Seakitchen! Hope you're doing ok :-) Yes the live action remakes have been a mixed bag. I did like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin though and probably 1 or 2 others. Disney's latest, Snow White, was addled with politics e.g. the Israel/Gaza war, the depiction of the dwarves and the US election. My concern now is possible collateral damage onto Lilo & Stitch and beyond. Having said that, L&S spanned across 4 films and 65 TV series episodes, and the fixation towards Stitch in particular never really went away. In the form of backpacks, water bottles, plushies, t-shirts and other merch. I just want it to be a fun family movie (read: without politics), and going by the trailers, I have hope.
 
Okies L&S is now out. I'll be seeing it this coming week, so haven't seen it yet, but I found out from the Wikipedia page that Gantu isn't in it! The idea was that Jumba and Pleakley were meant to capture Switch and when they failed to do that, Gantu was sent to do the honours instead. So not sure why he got left out. I'll post here again after I've seen it in a few days time.
 
So I went and saw this yesterday...

I love L&S but I feel this is another meh live action remake. Lots of iconic scenes missing and changes to the story that felt a bit... pointless. I can only imagine Captain Gantu was missing because maybe a child kidnap scene by a massive alien would've been too scary?

I also don't like the change to Jumba.

It was fine and my daughter enjoyed it but again it falls flat compared to the original. It's the internet so there's no making everyone happy but I think I was expecting the original L&S shot shot-for-shot with a few additional scenes but it was more like a reimagining of the film and taking out a lot of the bits that made it fun.
 
I don't think I've seen all of the Live Action films yet (Aladdin, The Lion King, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lady and the Tramp and the Little Mermaid) but I think the only one I've left enjoying it was probably Aladdin. L&S probably sits behind the Aladdin live action film, for me. Though I never really cared that much about Aladdin as a kid so perhaps thats why I enjoyed it more. I loved TJB and TLK but I really didn't like their live action remakes at all.
 
Cheers for the write-up @Junglist . Regarding a kid being kidnapped by a giant shark-man, L&S was a U when I bought the DVD in 2008. When I bought the blu-ray years later, it go re-graded to a PG. Watership Down, which was also a U then later a PG is scarier imo as it has more realistic and graphic scenes (blood). I remember making a thread years ago about Watership Down and whether it should stay as a U or become a PG. The consensus is that it should be a PG.

I'm still going to see L&S as a few of us have a few seats booked for tomorrow via Orange/Meerkat Wednesdays.

Agreed on the live action remakes that it's been hit and miss. Maleficent is worth a shout. It tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s point of view. Aladdin remake like you said is a lot of fun. It was actually the original that got me into Disney as an adult, as I wasn't into Disney as a kid.
