Limited connectivity but still can use internet etc

This is a lingering and very infuriating problem that I have had for a couple of months now.

I use a wired ethernet connection and I have the small yellow warning sign on my ethernet icon (bottom right on task bar) and it says that I am "limited" (WINDOWS 8.1). Despite it saying this, I can still access the internet, google, streams, play games online but it doesn't let me use window apps that need internet connection or even install windows updates! - its as if windows doesn't think I'm connected to the internet!

I've got the latest BIOS installed for my mobo. This problem seemed to arise around about when I was fiddling with the driver for when I didn't have a wired connection, thus was using a wifi card.

I have no AV so that's probably not a culprit.

Cheers.

Are you using Kaspersky or some other AV with its own firewall?

If this is your home router does your network in 'Network and Sharing Center' show the network as public or private?

If you are using Kaspersky it's worth having a look in its firewall settings as it puts a list of each network you connect to and categorises each there as public, local or trusted.

When you first connect to a network Windows asks whether you want to share files and depending on how you answer, then designates that network as public or private.

Is your connection set to obtain an IP automatically? Just wondering if the properties for your Ethernet connection are set to a static IP and gateway that's outside the subnet set on the router.

Just a couple of thoughts that sprung to mind.

Sounds like your Ethernet connection is configured with a static IP wrongly.

When you go into 'Network and Sharing Center', click 'Change adapter settings' on the left of that window. Then in the 'Network Connections' window that opens, right click on the icon that represents your Ethernet connection and choose 'Properties'. Then scroll down the list of items in the Ethernet Properties dialog box that opened and at the bottom of that list is an item called 'Internet Protocol Version 4', select this and then click the 'Properties' button on that dialog box. Does this dialog show the automatic options selected?

Also, have you been in the admin settings for your router perhaps and switched off the DHCP server by mistake?

Both automatic options are selected, yes.

If you open a 'Command Prompt' window from the old style start menu, x-menu or whatever it's called, enter 'ipconfig /all' without the quote marks, into this window.

In the details that command throws up, is the IP for the Ethernet adapter similar to the IP to access the router?

Do they both start 192.168?

Also, what does it say for 'Subnet Mask'?

Something else: i went into the Network and Sharing center and then on to "Change adapter settings" and then onto "Status" (of adapter) and its says i have no IPv4 or IPv6 connectivity. Is this something major?

My default gateway is 192.168.0.1, however my DNS server is different. Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

I think its just telling you what you already know, that you can't properly connect atm. I think this may be because you're not getting a correct IP from DHCP. It seems like your on the wrong subnet.

I wonder if the subnet is something other than 255.255.255.0 on the router as it should let you access the router admin through the browser.

You could try resetting the router but that will set stuff like your wireless network back to whatever the factory default was.

If you disconnect Ethernet cable and use the wireless adapter will it allow you to get to the router admin that way?

Also, is your Ethernet cable connecting directly to the router or is the router connected to a network switch and your PC connects to the network switch?

Your DNS on your machine should be the same as the gateway.*

*Unless you have a more advanced setup at home that you've configured yourself
