Hi I recently purchased a laptop with a built in intel pro wireless 2200bg network card. To cut a long story short the computer is having trouble obtaining an ip address( it is coming up with 169.xxx). I thought it was a problem with the hardware until i tried it at school and found that it worked perfectly. I then went home and tried it directly plugged in via ethernet and usb both coming up with the same problem. Everytime windows tells me that there is limited or no connectivity
I have tried the following steps:
Winsock fix
Windows update ( the one that is meant to make it work after installing sp2)
Reinstalling wireless
Reinstalling Tcpip
Reinstalling ethernet port
changing settings to 10mbps on the ethernet
The wireless is without wep or wpa authentication so it should work fine my dads powerbook works fine on it i am at a loss at what to do. PS it is telewest cable broadband
Any help would be appreciated
THNX

connected to cablemodem or wireless router?

if cablemodem then you need to update the MAC address at telewest MAC tool (i was with telewest 5 years ago so it mite be different now)

if wireless router, then u need to set the permission to accept your MAC address (mac filtering)

can you tell us about your network, do u have a wireless router?

i never knew that the cablemodem got wireless access point

ok then it wont work, cablemodem only accept 1 MAC address.

if i remember right, log in your telewest account, somewhere there is MAC tool, so u can update the MAC address from your laptop, i think it will be up to 24 hours before u can access to cablemodem (mite be quicker now)

after that your wireless router wont work

cablemodem is not the problem, its your wireless router, plug back in the router and add your MAC address in MAC filtering tool (router, not cablemodem)

I unplugged the wireless router and plugged the cablemodem into the pc

Don't worry, you don't need to update the account with the device's MAC address anymore. Telewest did away with that at least 2 years ago now. Did you unplug the cable modem's power before changing the device it's plugged in to?
