Hi All, Just been "Talked" to, My grandparents seem to think that it would be better to spend about £7000 extra, and live near Uni, rather than travel every day, having to be up for 6, and not getting back till late + trying to manage house, Work, coursework, shopping, etc.

Seem to think it will make me ill if i try, so looks like im going to throw money away... Was just looking around to see whats left, but im realy not sure whats good and whats not.... I notice this:

http://www.studentpad.co.uk/lincoln...uickSearch=&agent=&subAgentSearch.x=&x=44&y=7

Looks interesting as it comes with internet access, But... are there any other charges im missing? Are there any catches? and does anyone else have any experience of the area? TY!

I don't know anything about what student accomodation might be good - but I completely agree with your grandparents. I would absolutely hate to live away from University, and I would be surprised if you spent all that time travelling and didn't regret it.

What you think would happen if i did spend all that time traveling... 2hours 20 or so a day, and you think it is worth that much extra just to be happier, be able to have a little more sleep, be 10 mins or so from home so i can go do work etc?

Basically yes, there is no way I could live stand to live at home while going to Uni. I presume you mean you will be living at home otherwise? Living on your own gives you much more freedom and makes you generally a more independant person. This is worth the extra money in my opinion. Rent wise it seems like its pretty standard (although I don't know the lincon area).

Maybe not in your case then, depends on how inconvenient you find the commute I guess :p

Lincoln is quite a pleasant place to live, providing you move to a decent area. Over the past few years the a large amount of the city centre has been taken over by purpose built luxury blocks of student flats. If you contact the university they should be able to put you in touch with the management/letting agencies.

There are also a number of student houses, particularly in the West Parade area, which is almost entirely occupied by students.

Areas to avoid - Ermine, St Giles, Hykenham. You would also be wise to avoid living towards the south end of town - Scorer Street, Newark Road etc.

i wouldn't recommend park court, if you're looking for a student room then mezzino are quite good, not bad quality, good features but quite pricey at 80/wk. EVERYTHING is included with them, nothing more to pay. otherwise have a look around the clubeasy websites for accomodation.

another alternative is to look at the "room available" signs around uni and take one of them at the cheap.

i live in the south end of town which you were suggested to avoid by HaX, we've had no problems in the 3 months we've had this house.

for simple accomodation i'd deffinately go for mezzino. www.mezzino.co.uk

Dam that sounds like a home away from home

Apartments have 4, 5 or 6 ensuite bedrooms, together with shared, fully fitted and furnished kitchen, dining and lounge areas. Each en-suite bedroom comes fully furnished and includes a double-sized bed, desk, pin board, bin, chair, wardrobe, wall-mounted shelving unit, and a 3-drawer unit under the desk. You’ll also have your own shower, washbasin and toilet. Each bathroom is also fitted with a towel rail, bin and shaver point. Curtains are provided and there’s a wall light and desk lamp. Your apartment is already wired for access to the Internet so all you need to apply for is a telephone, if you want one in your room. Telephone connection can be made on the day you move in.

*EDIT* If I went there, do you think its to late to get parking? Not realy worth it if I have to pay £600 to park on a carpark each year

Also just a slightly better explanation of things..... I think :D

Mooooo, Not sure what to do with regards to getting to Uni.

Option 1) Catch the Bus, This costs £52 a month, I have to be up at 6 in the morning in order to catch it in time to get to Lincoln, For any lessons that Run abefore 12. For Any lessons that run at 2 or after I have to catch the bus at 5:15, not getting home untill 6:20, Then having to walk so by the time I get home its 7:00.

The journy takes 1h 10, sot thats 2h 20mins each day im wasting.

I would be doing this 5 days a week, On top, I will have to clean my flat, do my washing, get my shopping done, do course work, get a little ammount of sleep and go to work at the weekend ( I get saterday off).

Option 2) Driving, This costs £600 a year parking, + around £75 a month in petrol so thats £125 A month, I could set out a little later, If for example my lesson was at 11, I could set out at 10, instead of 6, same applies with coming home.

I would still have to do all the above jobs, and would still spent quite a while traveling each day where I cannot be doing work.

Also my car is only insured Third Party, So if it gets stolen im stuffed.

*NOTE* Now to note, each of these are dependant on clear roads and good weather, where I live we do tendto get cut off, busses get cancled and roads get blocked, or are very dangerouse, So there will be days in winter that I simply cannot get.

Option 3) Renting a room in lincoln, This would cost £55-85 a week so around £175 - £270 per month. This would enable me to be around a 10 min walk from Uni, I could get more sleep, I could nip home for lunch, or to do course work, I would be living a realy student life, getting mixing experience etc.

This works out very expensive however as I will be then running a room in Lincoln, and a Flat at home, now I do have the money avalible for me to do this...

I would still have to do washing, cleaning, shopping etc, But as I would be so close to the Uni, I would not first have to drive an hour to get home to do it, by which time I will be nackered.

I with this would come to Uni early Monday morning, and then stay in the room for the monday to friday, and on friday night I would come back home so that I could relax, have a propper bath, sleep in my bed, sleep in a bit saterday and still get to my job on Sunday.

*NOTE* Again another note with regards to money, I have enough to do all of the above from the budget I have worked out, However the drawback Is with option 3 i feel a little like im throwing my money away, and I will come out with a substantial ammount less than with option 1 or 2.

My grandparents insist that option 3 is the best bet, Not only because of weather conditions for driving etc, But also for my health, they feel that running around like that, getting little sleep etc will make me ill, and that it would be better for me to come out a little poorer, than to come out very ill....

However im not realy sure which would be best, Part of me is saying Oi Oi, Money Dont waste it, another part is saying Come on be sensible, do you realy want to be a walking zombie....

So which option do you guys think would be best? and why?

Ermine & St Giles I would agree with you on because they are not only quite a distance away from the uni but they are the rougher areas of the city, worst being boutham (not sure how you spell that tbh) specifically in that last case Westwick drive.

Monks road isn't the nicest place but its got quite a lot of student accomodation due to the college being there (still a good 15 - 20 minute walk to the uni tho)

Newark road and Hykeham and both even further away (quite close together really) but Hykeham is actually a village / suburb and you would be looking at easily 20 minutes at least on the bus each way, and its quite expensive for housing.

Carholme road & West parade are about the closest you will get to the university but slightly expensive as they are moderately more affluent areas of the city, Still a reasonable amount of student housing / professional rentals.

Scorer street on the other hand I have no idea why people would advise against it, its not a fabulous looking part of town architecturally but its central and no rougher than your average city centre area, I live around five minutes walk from Scorer street, there are plenty of amenities locally and you could easily make the University in 10 - 15 minutes walking from there.

My biggest gripe with the sincil bank/maze area is the huge amount of students and immigrants in housing here, no offence to either group but it does make for some noisy neighbors and a lot of niggling annoyances (mostly drunks at night and occasionally ridiculously loud music at stupid times)

I don't know what student housing is like through agencies (club easystudent is one we have locally that I know of) but private renting is pretty cheap. I pay less than three hundred a month for a house shared with one other person and have pretty much free run of a three bedroom house.

in all honesty half of the uni experience is getting away from home and doing your own thing, some of my closest friends are from my student days regardless of where they now live, going in a couple of weeks to stay with a friend who moved down to london which will be nice :)

anyway, if you fancy a chat with a local ;) gimme an MSN on

Just curious mate, where are you? there is a lot of 'south end of town' in Lincoln :P just a street nearby or summat should be enough...

Personally to me south of the city is getting on towards south common roundabout, but some say its anything below the ped. area of the high street :D

Pfft im no way gonna fit in, I dont drink, Im quiet (Unconfident and socialy inept realy but im hoping uni will change both of them) I always make sure my noise is minimal and I will help anyone that needs it, even holding a door for someone that takes 5 mins to get through it :D

Thanks for your advice, lot of people from lincoln it seems hehe

im on carholme road at the moment :D

best place I would say is either Brayford Quays, the Junxion or The pavillions (looks for mezzino on the net). For houses, lighthouse property or easy student are the 2 best ones I think.

Easy to get a place still, theres loads at brayford quays lasy year and that was even when the pavillions wasn't complete. just give places a call.

Park Court is pap, dont even bother with it :)

Where abouts on carholme mate? I used to live on newland street west when I moved outta home, back then the rent was cheap as. used to think 35 quid a week was a lot ;)

was curious what the rent is actually like nowadays, when I moved back there a couple years back it was pretty horrendous but i was up on the top end of west parade, so pretty nice houses.

not going to openly post it on a forum for those that want me dead, but its very close to the stadium, but on the other side of the river.

you can still have a good time and not drink, it just depends on your company. i'm not an excessive drinker because i know how bad i am drunk. unfortunately uni will not help change you unless you put the effort in, last year i completely messed up and i have learned from it.

parking is IMPOSSIBLE for students, both only offer disabled spaces as required by law. lincoln council is not car friendly. last year one of my flatmates at the pavilions brought her car down for 3 weeks and it was ticketed twice in that time for parking on the pavement outside the block.

pavilions will always have space, don't worry about it running out soon.

one of my friends commutes into uni, and kips on one of his friends floors if he has an early lecture the next day after a night out. i thought it was a joke but apparently he does it often.

I know pretty much exactly where you mean mate ;) I used to live on Knights terrace which is just behind the indian restraunts and stuff.

I presume the parking issue you are talking about is more to do with parking at the Uni and at the halls on campus? because Sincil bank around the stadium in my experience is pretty easy unless its a home match, in which case the locals don't tend to move their cars ;)

we have a garage for a car if you want to rent it out?
