Line stats - any good?

Are these stats any good? Exchange is supposedly ADSLMax enabled but the downstream seems poor:

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin:
7.5 18.0 db

Line Attenuation:
54.5 31.5 db

Data Rate:
1888 448 kbps

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 16.6 db 25.0 db

This is what I get for my 2Mb fixed ADSL connection. It runs fine with low pings and never seems to drop out. Not sure about MAX though.

Hi mate, They are shocking stats for your attenuation
Heres mine
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2432 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 18 db 6 db

If my target DS noise margin was back to 6 then I would be syncing around 4800 and I would expect the same for your line.

I suggest you check this out...

What router are you using?

It's about all you're going to get. Expect to get about 1.5Mbps.

Yup that's pretty much what it's getting.

Dunno, it's my Dad's connection at his place. Was round there just now and noticed it wasn't downloading very quickly given the bb package he's got.

('Tis an ethernet based one at least though.)

Am I right in thinking that the SNR ratio on the downstream isn't that great - it looks like a noisy line. And can someone explain the attentuation (what it is, how it affects speed?) Cause I don't really get it.

Also I've heard about profiles being "stuck" - could that be the case? If so what do I need to do to sort it?

It may well be a noisy line but I'm betting on internal wiring being the problem.
Attenuation means http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/12
So basically the higher the Attenuation the more signal loss your get and lower speeds :( While your attenuation is high(54) I think its capable of at least another 1Mb as long as your internal wiring is sorted(If that is indeed the problem)

As for stuck profile...You should be on a 1.5Mb profile which = about 175KB/sec download speed - Might be a little more or a bit less.

Sniper123, how would I be able to tell what the profile is, and how would I go about getting it changed to improve the speed if it was possible to improve the line elsewhere? My Dad is on an "up to 8Meg" product.

I don't expect the speed to go up a huge amount given the distance from the exchange to his house, but I would have thought it would be a bit higher as I know next door can get a bit higher than that.

Goto http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
This should tell you your IP rate.BTW if your expecting anymore speed out of your line the only chance you have it to follow this guide step by step http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php.

Nice. Will give that a try next time I'm there.

The BT socket should be ok, as it's brand new - there was no BT line in the house before my parents moved in a couple of months ago. No ide about the internal wiring though.

Cheers for the help :)
