Hi

At the moment I am experiencing a rise in pings in the uk. When I test bbc.co.uk it usually returns a ping of approx 20ms but for the past couple of days this has been double that at around 40ms.
My router is returning the stats below and I wondered if anybody could tell me if they are bad and that is why the ping has increased ?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3712 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 12.2 db 8.0 db

Thanks

Aquiss tell me that they have put me on fastpath now but pings are still around 40ms at sites like jolt.co.uk.
The response I am getting seems to blame my exchange for the rise in pings but this seems odd because last week I was getting 20ms pings from adsl24 and using the plusnet checker it reports that my exchange is green.

I will see what Aquiss say tomorrow.

Right got a Mac code today because Aquiss feel that there is nothing more they can do to get the ping lower. I must say that while I have not recieved a positive outcome regarding the pings the actual customer service has been good.

Now before migrating out and noticed on one website a way of checking via my router (Netgear DGN2000) if the line is interleaved or Fastpath.

Below is some of the info that I managed to find.

# adslctl info --stats
adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 0
Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 448 Kbps, Downstream rate = 3776 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: G.DMT
Channel: Interleave
Trellis: ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime

Now that says to my limited knowledge that the line is still interleaved even though Aquiss have requested it to be turned off.

Is it possible that the router is reporting this incorrectly ?

Thanks

You're leaving an ISP with good customer service because your pings to the BBC website are 40ms? Ping packets are often treated as low-priority, if web pages aren't loading any slower then what's the problem?

My gaming on the ps3 has taken a turn for the worse with the increase in ping. I only give the bbc ping time for an example. It seems the interleave is stuck on for some reason so if that can be turned off and the pick gets back to what my line usually delivers then I wont be leaving Aquiss.

How long have you given them to get it turned off? As Caged says, an extra 20ms isn't making any odds to your online gaming.

The problem seems to be getting interleaving turned off. Aquiss have asked BT to turn it off and it seems BT have informed them that they have carried out that request. However Aquiss have now agreed that the interleaving is still switched on so they have contacted BT once more to correct this. I feel that if the inteaving can be switched off then I will probably be happy with the service, it is not cheap at £25 a month so its not like I have chosen a bargain bucket deal and should expect the resulting rank service. Hopefully I should know on Monday if the line has been altered.

Yes, your ISP would have to pass a request out through Enta to BT Wholesale to get it turned off. That's why I asked how you'd given them to do it.
Also, have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting?

They have had 1 week to try and get the interleaving switched off and it seems for some reason BT have reported back to Aquiss that it has been switched off when it has not. I have reconnected the router on several occasions at the request of Aquiss but the interleaving is still on. Monday is the next date when we are hoping BT will once again attempt to switch the interleaving off.

Well finally got some success and interleaving has been switched off and the pings have now dropped from 40ms to 20ms:D. It seems like BT could not disable interleaving for some reason and I believe an engineer had to look into the problem. Well done to Aquiss for chasing it up for me until the problem was solved.
