How does this work, I keep getting many updates as I've put in for a job role of engineer or technician (which is what I currently dol but it's a massive field, it also doesn't seem to filter the notifications very well as I'd put a salary limit of 40k plus but most jobs don't tell you a salary which seems daft to me.

linkedin seems very random at what it pushes at you and even though I've updated my settings to indicate I'm not looking, it still sends stuff through. Were I looking, it would not be where I'd start - there are specialised sites for my industry that are far better (jobserve for example).

Missing salary details isn't just a linkedin thing, its very common and really annoying. None of us are altruistic: money is going to be a top 3 deciding factor in any job move. Things come my way a lot (usually recruiters contacting me direct), but if they don't include salary and location I won't pass them on to any of my contacts who might be interested.

I didn't want to sound greedy, but my thinking is that salary is going to be pretty high on the list for changing jobs so I don't get why it's not included. I wasn't sure how good it was as it seems like most people at my workplace use it.

But surely If you work in that field of work already, you should know the expected salary range? If not you could always look up salaries on indeed of similar jobs in those locations?

Companies tend to pay what the going rate is, they will do their own research, prior to posting a job.

Also I wouldn't say salary is the be and end all for jobs, iv known people take high paid jobs and hated it. Sure it helps to earn more money, but it's not the be and end all.

Enjoy what you do, that is all.

Oh I enjoy what I do I'm just seeing what else is available. The problem is (and not wanting to sound blunt), is that if you type in engineer, it's basically the whole field. For instance, my job is quite technical, but engineer also can be a guy who fits satallite dish's, or omeone who fits boilers etc. It's hard to refine further without looking at individual jobs.

Yes engineer is a broad term to use, it could be mechanical engineer, electrical engineer etc.

Best thing to do is type in what your closest job title would be then go through the results.

Yea might try that. The whole salary thing annoys me though, for instance I'm on 35k if I applied for a job and went through the whole process and at the end of it they say of salary is 20k, we've just all wasted our time. I know they sometimes do it to stop current employees from seeing it, but I still think it's daft.

Just have the money discussion up front, at least a ballpark figure....decent recruiters will have that chat first up precisely to avoid any time-wasting.

Yeah, but sometimes you're applying direct. I once went through a lengthy application process, answering various questions online, got invited to an interview, and fortunately i checked salary before the interview, only to find it was a decent chunk less than i was on and well below what i'd have considered market rate.

Had then just put a ballpark figure on the advert it would've saved a lot of wasted time all round.

Engineer covers a huge range of jobs and roles, and even something like Mechanical engineer covers a vast range of specialisms. What you shouldn't see are satellite or boiler installers as those jobs definitely aren't engineering.

They are listed as gas engineers or have engineer in the title . I did see some that say dual fuel engineer:D. It is a bit ridiculous, I think its a case of someone's not quite sure what to call the job so let's stick an engineer in the job title.
