Well yes, but then rather than hoping they might respond to your sig, your better off being proactive and connecting with them directly on LinkedIn.

spamming everyone you've ever contacted with actual linked in requests likely isn't a good approach, having the link there in an e-mail seems fair enough

LinkedIn is the only social network where I mash accept on every request. It's not supposed to be a friends list that you curate.

It's supposed to be what you want it to be, it's absolutely expected to be a business network where people connect with people they know and can often vouch for in most peoples eyes.
