Linksys router problems..

My friend said that their linksys wrt54gs router had stopped working. I have the same router and I have tried it at my house and I cannot seem to get it to work. When i turn the router on the power light just keeps flashing. I have looked on the linksys website and it says that this could be a problem with the firmware. Now i have downloaded the firmware but im unable to put it onto the router as i cant get onto the router settings because it wont let me. Has anybody else experienced problems like this? or does anybody know how to help?
