i have had a problem with my router now for around 2 weeks and its really bugging me now!

my desktop is wired into the router and keeps dropping off and reconnecting, sometimes its not too bad, other times it searches for an IP address repetitively.

the router is a Linksys WAG54G. i have tried swapping ports on the router and also swapping network cards on the desktop but the problem still persists.
i looked to upgrade the firmware but linksys dont do any, but was told 3rd party firmware might be an option.

the wireless is fine, my laptop wireless performance hasnt changed at all in this time. so i assume that i can conclude that my ISP etc. isnt the problem.

help please with this or any other suggestions - this is really making me go mad now!

I had the same problem, same rtouter, it finally packed in and wired didn't work at all.

I'm trying to get it replaced still, linksys haven't been great.

not the cable :(

when i swapped the cable over it seemed good... for a while :(

any links to firmware? i dont know what else to test.

thanks

I have a similar problem with the wag54gs even with latest firmware.

It seems to lose DHCP even though I have set all my computers to run of a static ip. So I have to do a hard reboot of the router to it gets my internet back.

Personally I think the router is crap so I'm looking for a decent alternative.

try plugging your laptop into the router via the same ethernet cable

see if the laptop drops the same way

if it does, its the router, if not, its your PC.

PS you say it searches for an IP, it shouldnt do this unless the IP lease is up. Most DHCP will have a least of about 24hours or more. So im almost certain its your PC.

have you tryed different PCI slots for the network cards, it may well be a motherboard issue, like irregular power to the network cards ?

Just a quick question. When you were looking for the firmware, did you specify that your location was the uk?

If you go the linksys.com, in the top left corner change your location to the UK, then go to support, downloads and then choose your router. It will be the wag54g ver.1.2 or ver2. It will tell you on the underside of the router.

This threw me a few month ago when i was looking for updated firmware for a Linksys product. If my location was the United States no formware was available. UK however, it was.

Give it a try.

If you own a linksys it's well worth keeping an eye on these forums. This post http://www.linksysinfo.org/portal/forums/showthread.php?t=45564 should give you the info you need (my post is last in thread). I think you will fnd it to be only a temporary solution and I would instigate and RMA if it is under 3 years old.

I have just received my replacement which is a WAG54GS but dunno whether it is any good or not. Toying with idea of ebaying it before I break packaging and using money for a Draytek or similar. Is anyone able to recommend te WAG54GS?

tried updating the firmware and that made no difference. gave up and went and got a new router/modem as need it for work. now works fine - therefore have to assume the linksys was knackered. :)

Yeah my reply was about turning off the autosensing of the traffic speed on network card and it seemed to pick back up. Like I say if the router is under 3 years old RMA it anyway and get a new one then shove it on ebay.
