Hi Guys,

I have a problem, hopefully someone might know how to solve it.

I have the above router and two laptops. One is a Toshiba Satellite Pro and a Dell Latitude D400.

The Toshiba connects to the internet ok, all is working wirelessly though i do get some disconnections which do connect straight away again.

The D400 says it is connected from the Dell Wireless Utility, WEP. Key accepted. But, when i click on IE/Firefox or MSN i can't connect to the internet. This is really frustrating because at Uni the D400 connects fine to the Uni wireless network.

In TCP/IP everything is on auto detect. I have tried ipconfig /release, no luck.

When i do ipconfig it says domain_not_set.invalid in the DNS suffix. IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway have IPs but are different to the ones of the Toshiba.

I don't know what else i can try. I have tried changing some of the settings in the router via 192.168.1.x but have had no luck. Also, sometimes it won't even allow me to access that utilty now.

Also, when i plug the D400 in to the router via ethernet i can't get the internet either. Though it still says connected. The D400 has XP Pro, Toshiba has XP Home.

I haven't done a firmware upgrade because i don't know how to. (Noob).

Anyone have any ideas of what i can try?

Another thing i noticed was that the internet gateway icon had disabled underneath it. I tried to right click, enable it but it wouldn't allow me.

Does it sound like the problem is with the router? because the laptop connects fine at Uni.

This thread might shed a bit of light:

Tweaking the Advanced Internet Connection Sharing and TCP/IP settings on the Dell is likely to be the eventual fix to the problem, I suggest looking at the Toshiba settings and trying to find differences. Test one setting at a time and be methodical. Sorry I can't be more help.

Have you tried setting static IP addresses for the machine that's having the problem?

Do ipconfig /all (when set to automatic)
make a note of the IP address range i.e 192.168.0.*
Go into TCP/IP properties for the card and set a static IP address with the routers IP address as the gateway.
For the DNS server, go to www.opendns.com and get some DNS servers to rule out any DNS issue that the router is having..

Thanks for the replies guy, still no joy.

I found that link before i started this thread. I tried the Dell on another wireless network and it connected without any problems.

I managed to upgrade the firmware.

Now the Toshiba doesn't connect to the router, but the Dell has connected (only via ethernet, doesnt work wirelessly), though it says the IP on the wireless is 169.254.159.198.

Local Area Connection

IP 81.102.134.29
Subnet Mask 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway 81.102.132.1

Before they were normal.

I feel like throwing the router away and getting a new one.. :(

Edit,

So now i have the modem plugged into the D400. The IP that comes up is 169.254.86.187, does it sound like a problem with the ISP (Virgin) as there is no router connected. Someone i spoke to says it sounds like i'm not getting a public IP from the ISP.
