Friend has recently bought a new Linksys WAG54GS router but is having troubles with his wired internet download speeds - theyre very slow (20kB/s where it used to be 600-800kB/s on his old router). He still gets fast normal upload speeds and his ping in gaming is still low (constant ~20ms). Any ideas of what it could be?

Someone piggybacking on the wireless? :p

If it is rebooted, is it slow from the start or is the slowdown progressive?

Sorry to gate-crash this party, but I have been using a WAG354G Router for 3 years now and it has been absolutely rock solid for me, but 2 weeks ago, a storm took it out.

Now, given the reliability of my router I wanted the exact same model, but the one I got, while still the very same one, was now a v2 and my old one was a V1 - I only noticed when I weht to update the Firmware.

Anyway, I have not updated the firmware on taht to the latest, but I have noticed that the Wireless capabilities of this router is absolutely useless.

For example, I have on the previous router, been able to use the LapTop in the outhouse , and even in the car on the driveway FFS, and I have given it to the kids to play with in the garned and its been rock solid and never missed a beat.

This one however is a complete waste of time.

First of all, if I try having any form of security on it, WAP / WEP its fine, but the next time I try to use it, I need to renew it, on both the router and the LapTop ( Obviously I need to the leptop when I do the router but you know what I mean ). Its also kicking itself off all the time, so I might be lucky enough for it to last long enough to display a fully cached webpage, but I have never had it on the internet long enough to display the OCUK Forum page thats for sure, its THAT bad.

The speed is awful too ... Tryign to copy a 5MB MP3 from one of the other PCs to the LapTop can take up to 15 minutes? - I cannot possibly play an MP3 back over the network cos it plays for half a second and then pauses for 5 or 6 seconds then plays another fraction of a second then pauses...Useless.

I am now running it with no security at all and the speed is still the same, but at least it does not kick itself off all the time... It will stay connected like this, but at the useless speeds.

I have chucked an Ethernet cable at it and its great on that, but not through wireless.

Any suggestions?
