Linksys Wireless Router Lag Spikes

I've got a problem with my wireless internet. I get lag spikes every couple of minutes, so for instance if I'm playing a game online, it'll hang for a sec or two and then carry on.

I've tried continuously pinging www.bbc.co.uk every second (using 'ping www.bbc.co.uk -t' in dos) and I get returns of between 12 and 14ms, then it will go up to around 1500ms then the next second will fall to around 900. Very weird! Any ideas why this could be happening?

Out of interest, on the Linksys webpage there are various sets of drivers for each version of router v1, v2 v3 etc. How do I find out what version my router is?

Right, just checked. It's v.4, the drivers I downloaded from the Linksys website were correct.

I'm on Firmware Version : v1.05.3

Just disabled the Wireless Zero Configuration as well. I'll restart my PC and ping bbc.co.uk and report back.

[EDIT] Well after the restart it wouldn't allow me to connect to the net at all. So I have re-enabled it and set it to Automatic / Start.

If you scroll through the below, you can see how often it lags on me. It's starting to cut out without the XP wireless losing it's actual connection so could it be something from PC to router? As when I ping the router I get the same thing as below, but < 1ms then jumps to approx 800ms

Hi mate,

If I disconnect the WZC it wont connect as that is what it is connecting by at the moment. I am not using Linksys' software to connect with.

I do have an option to set what speed it is, but I am the only one connected to the wireless router at the moment and I thought that the setting was for transferring files across the network, not the internet?

I've tried disabling all security and that did not solve the problem.

It does indeed.

When I boot my PC up, it tries to connect via Linksys, however it cannot connect to the internet. I look in the 'Site 'Survey' part of the linksys software and it confirms my wireless card is connecting to my access point (router) but it cannot find the internet.

When I ping bbc.co.uk via the router page (192.168.1.1) I get no lag spikes, only when I use dos. This indicates that there is a problem between my PC and the router???

OK, I've got hold of a different wireless PCI card (A Buffalo one if it makes any difference).

I reset my router (by pressing the button underneath) pressed the SES setup on the front of the router and updated to the latest drivers for the wireless card.

Good news - the lag spikes have disapeared. So it appears the Linksys wireless card is faulty, so I am RMA'ing it. However, I get disconnected every so often.

For instance, if I play a game of Pro Evolution Soccer online, it sometimes disconnects. I'm running a ping www.bbc.co.uk -t in dos to see what happens and it says that 'Request timed out.'.

It also throws me out of MSN, so I'm guessing it completely disconnects me.

I've got the wireless security setup OK and I haven't really changed any other settings except put it to channel 11 instead of the default 6, and changed the name of the SSID.

Any suggestions fellas? It's incredibly frustrating!

From memory I believe it is 0. Or it could be 3600, I'll check at lunchtime when I pop home.

I can either enable or disable DHCP server and the client lease time is 0.

Any other suggestions mate?

OK, I'll take a look when I get in later (back at work now).

Any idea what the highest value could be? Or should it prompt me if I enter a number too high?

By the way, I can connect to the internet, browse websites normally but just not hold a sustained game. It's quite random, really bizarre. I played 8 straight games against 3 different people in one gaming session with Pro Evo and then I want to play my mate and it disconnects whilst choosing the teams.

It's very annoying and it's a problem I shouldn't have! You should just be able to plug in your router, connect with your wireless card, setup security and away you go!

Thing is, it would chuck me out of MSN and Ventrilo if I had them open as well, so it's as if my internet is completely disconnected for around 30 seconds to a minute.

My uPnP is on, so it should allocate ports as / when required. I checked using TCPView to see what is using which ports.

Hmmmm, just had a thought actually. What would happen if:

MSN was open (how many ports does this use?)
Ventrilo used as voice comms,
Pinging a website to check connectivity,
Pro Evo 5 (2 ports - 1 local I believe)

If I have a limit of so many ports I can open, would it then close all apps and reallocate ports, therefore chucking me out of the game?

Power saving is disabled on the card. I've tried using a linksys pci card and a Buffalo 54g wireless card.

Last night I was having a bit of a play...

Moved my pc and router in to the same room, cm's away from each other. Tried playing the game, and I timed out.

Hard wired in to the number 1 slot, connected. Timed out.

Went straight to the modem and it timed out.

I noticed that the cable light was flashing, indicating the cable modem had reset itself. Why would this be? Could this be something to do with the amount of 'connections'?

I turned off my cable modem last night, and I wont turn it back on until about 5.30pm this afternoon. Hopefully this will give me a new IP address.

What should my next steps be?
