Every time the routers power gets unplugged I have to manually reset the router, then log into the admin area and clone my PCs MAC address, then click DHCP Release then DHCP Renew to get the internet to work.

Is this a common problem? Could it be firmware related?

I'm running Firmware Version: v4.30.9, Nov. 1, 2006

Why not try updating to a newer firmware? Especially a custom one, such as Tomato.

Might not be your problem but installing Tomato will improve the usability of the route amazingly.

Yep, go for Tomato. Flash to the latest version, use the NVRAM clear thorough option to erase all traces of the previous firmware's settings, and set it up again. Should work great.

another vote for tomato

visit polarcloud.com and download the 7z file from there (use winamp or 7zip to extract the WRT54GL.bin file (or called similar), then use the router upgrade page to update to it :)

then clear the NVRAM as said above

awesome awesome firmware

I've setup about 4 of these now, I've not heard a peep from the users I set up :)

I prefer the modded Tomato released by Victek (SITE). It includes the SpeedMod changes, plus some conntrack tweaks and other goodies like a newer version of BusyBox and later versions of drivers etc. It runs even better than stock Tomato!

Stock Tomato struggles with torrents and browsing at the same time (for the occasions I like to use them over Usenet - eg Linux distros etc). Victek's mod on the other hand allows me 2.2 MB/sec from uTorrent while still loading new web pages instantly. Win :D

If only it could keep more logs in RAM. I hate how the bandwidth logging has a "monthly" option but runs out of space and resets the logs after about five days :(
