VM Superhub + Switch problem

Well I have just upgraded from 60mb/s to 120mb/s internet and my trusty friendly happy Linksys WRT54GL (which has been on the majority of the last 5 years+ and worked perfectly!) can only support 100mb via Ethernet

Now I love this router, it's flashed with Tomato 1.28 and has truly been a dream to work with! Should I upgrade to something with gigabit Ethernet to make full use of my 120MB internet? If so what are the hot choices now day's and how does it compare to the old Linksys box?

I rarely use the wifi but its good to have, You wont catch me just using the Virgin media superhub though!

Thanks for reading

if you dont need 100mb wifi then i wouldnt bother spending money on another router - id buy a cheap gigabit switch instead. Modem (i assume the super hub) >> switch >> wrt54gl and every other wired component.

Infact that's exactly what I have, except mine Linksys is a wrt54g.

the tp-link TL-SG1005D can be had for about 13 quid, it's had lots of good reviews. It's not the model i have, i've got a 5 port switch made by tenda, cant remember the model number. They are all much of a muchness at that price :p

The only thing is I personally love the security of the WRT54GL, the features are amazing and I will really hate to lose them for a while until i get an updated linksys router. But after testing i can confirm the MAX throughput of the WRT54GL on Wired connection is around 60MB + 4MB upload, At the moment just using the Virgin Media super hub in modem mode im sitting on 120MB + 12MB upload.

Aye, unfortunately the WRT54GL is quite an old router with a (by modern standards) quite low throughput on the WAN/LAN :(

I went for an Asus N66U when we got upgraded to 120mb, although to be honest the N55U would probably have done as well for our needs (both can more than cope with the throughput).

So my TP-Link SG1005D arrived today, was so easy to set up literally plug and play. While I havn't tested transfers between PC's yet I can tell you I'm on full 120Mb with 11.5Mb upload and my old Linksys box is happily supplying WIFI to the house

I had exactly the same as you running Tomato as well. As you say it was super reliable but the most I could get is 45Mb wired. I had to change to Asus RT-N16 (with Shibbby's Tomato) which could handle the 100Mb OK but CPU (overclocked to 533Mhz )would be at nearly 100% when downloading using IPv6 via the router and downloading from Usenet. Unfortunately the RT-N16 died so replaced it with the even better Asus RT-N66 which also supports Shibby Tomato. This handles everything with a breeze and is a joy to use.

If you can stretch to the N66 I would recommend that. I got it for £100 from OcUK clearance.

Ah, Well it was bound to happen! I have an issue, what I thought works well doesn't at all!

From VM Superhub (modem mode) > TP-Link SG1005D > My pc Works

VM Superhub (modem mode) > TP-Link SG1005D > 2nd PC Works

VM Superhub (modem mode) > TP-Link SG1005D > Linksys router works

The issue comes when I connect more than one device EG: If I plug My pc and a 2nd PC in the house to the switch then the first one to get the internet keeps it and the 2nd PC says no network access, Same with the linksys router if i plug that in first then the WIFI works but no PC's can get a wired connection from the switch.

I have tried mutiple ways of turning everything on, different ports on the switch and cable configurations and I think im starting to lose it Please help!

It's because your superhub is in modem mode. Modem mode turns the DHCP server OFF. This means only one device can connect to it at a time; it's intended for use with an additional router, using the 2nd router to manage IP assigning to everything connected to that.

turning modem mode off on the superhub and turning the DHCP server off on the wrt54 should be enough to to fix; then the superhub would manage DHCP. Sorry i should have mentioned this, it's how mine is set up also and it works perfectly - I dont see why people make such a fuss about modem mode!.

Surprised you were happy with the WRT54GL with 60Mb .... when I moved to 60Mb from 20Mb I found I only got 30-40Mb through the WRT with Superhub in modem mode whereas when I tried with Superhub as router I got 60Mb on wired ethernet (N.b. only did this to test speed as I'd known from the start that I had no intention of using Superhub in non-modem mode) and gathered that this was the highest speed its processor could manage. I swicthed to a RT56U and am happy with that (though even that has problems with 1900s era thick solid internal walls!)

Well im having to give up with the Switch, just cant get internet to work through it, so having to (For the moment) use the VM Super hub in normal mode, connected my WRT54GL to it for decent WIFI and im going to look into getting an updated router that can handle Tomato and 120mb internet but hopefully not more than £50 ;)

Superhub (modem mode) > router > switch
