I have been after a wireless router for a while now to use with my 360, DS and maybe a laptop and PS3 in the near future. Then I stumbled upon the WRT54GL and after reading about the custom firmwares and seeing how cheap they are I decided to take the plunge and buy one today for when I switch ISP sometime in the next week.

My problem is that I have no clue what I am looking at when it comes to the firmwares :p so I was wondering if someone could be kind enough point me in the right direction as to what to be looking for (I have tried a search engine but its not helpful when I dont know what to be looking at) The kind of thing I am looking for is which is the most popular one and why? Also what do they offer what the official firmware doesnt?

My understanding is that the WRT54GL is a great budget wireless router which can compete with and even outclass a lot of the more expensive ones which is why I picked it.

Thanks for anyhelp and more questions will be sure to follow ;)

OpenWRT is a popular one, adds the potential for a lot of extra features, might want to head over to http://openwrt.org/ and check out their Wiki for more indepth description.

There are also a lot of other modded firmwares floating around to turn it into instant WiFi hotspots, VoIP servers, VNP endpoints, a RADIUS server etc. mostly stuff that you would probably never need to use.

are you going with Be? if so don't they give you a wireless router for free?

I've got a linksys (will post the model when I get home) The only problem I had with it was it did not work on the Nildram LLU. I blame Nildram for this though.

I recommended my model to Miss Ks mum and it gave her no end of grief. The first bricked itself in the first 10 min of turning it on (honestly it wasn't me)
the second one had intermittent faults.

I have also used Netgear routers (currently using one as my main router with the linksys as a bridge/wireless access point) I personally prefer netgears. I have never, ever, ever had a problem with mine (which imo is worth spending the extra cash). The only thing that does appeal to me about the linksys routers is the open source firmware but I have not had the time to mess about with that yet.

The WRT54GL isn't a lot of use on ADSL, unless you have an ADSL modem already, and the Linksys ADSL routers aren't great.

Not gonna bother with Be* anymore its taking too long to come to my area (may 2007  ) plus the Be box modem is meant pretty bad and if I ever leave them they will want the router back and with the DS being as picky as it is I've just decided to go with this. I've found a few good Entanet resellers which will let you choose which package you want depending on your usage.

I can get an 8Mb down and 832kbps upload for about £30, I only really wanted Be* for the increased upload speed since even an 8Mb connection is more then enough for me, its only a 1 month contract too with the one I am considering going with so I though why not give them a try :) since I will be paying for it now myself I can pick of and choose what I want without getting moaned at :)

Cheers for that I just cancelled the order, glad I selected a later delivery date :) I miss-read the description I just assumed it had a modem built in since it was called 'broadband router' I will be more careful in future :p

What I was after was a wireless ADSL router w/built-in modem + 4 port switch for £50 or less and that would work with a 360, Laptop, PS3 + a DS (DS is meant to be picky with which routers it will work with which is the main problem picking one out :().

Looks like the hunt goes on then :(

Not used them personally but a lot of people say Billion make good routers.

Billion BiPAC 7300G

It's also compatible with ADSL2+ so if you decided to migrate to Be in the future you could use that instead of the one they provide.

I am using the WRT54GL + D-Link ADSL Ethernet Modem ...

Its brilliant. I use it with DD-WRT to prioritise traffic etc - so that full speed browsing to continue while Bit-torrent is sucking up as much as it can get.

I am also trying to learn more about it so that I can try to do some other stuff like putting some of the computers on a different virtual network so that my family cant get access to my network shares.
