Linksys WRT54GS V5 router

Just been doin some reading on this and lots are saying to stay away from Version 5.
Thing is I just bought one of these today and its the linksys wrt54gs V5.1 speedbooster one , now what I need to know is what is wrong with them and should I bother connecting it or take it straight back. :(

Its not compatible with the 3rd party firmwares that the previous versions were, it has less memory, but how this effects it in normal use I don't know.
 
The v5 was an attempt by linksys to make the WRTs cheaper to produce, but still let them sell it for the same price as always. As Gavstar says, it has less RAM (half), less flash (half), it runs vxWorks instead of Linux, and is no longer open source. People say the range is not as good as the old ones so they probably used cheaper radios too.

It sounds bad I know, but the WRT54GS used to be the best consumer router out there bar none, so even though they've made it worse, it's still only slightly crap rather than completely useless. And at least you have the GS rather than the even slower G version.
 
One effect the reduced RAM might have is reduced stability, especially if you start throwing hundreds of connections at it with your P2P client.

if thats the case this will have to go back, as I use P2P quite a bit.

now are ther any other good wireless routers worth getting
