I know first and foremost a speaker is there to reproduce music but there's something about a set of speakers with a lovely wood finish in which you can't help but be in awe of the craftsmanship that's gone into making them but for some strange reason Linn has started selling designer covers which for me have me shaking my head as to why you would cover up something so beautiful

Spousal acceptance factor? The same reason I no longer have a 400 quid Target hi-fi rack, with isolated shelves and the like, to house the beautiful Audiolab 8000A/P combo I no longer have that connected to sonically awesome Monitor Audio 14 floorstanders that I also no longer have!

(had already ditched the above kit before the current Mrs undergroove came along though)

I don't think they "just" covers. Looks like they've been designed to repel/scare away small children so they don't go poking their fingers in your expensive speakers.

To me a high quality pair of speakers like Dynaudio or B&W etc. look really nice (those covers in the OP look horrible). But that is because I appreciate the sound quality and components etc. I actually like the look of speakers and I don't understand why a lot of women find speakers ugly and do not want them in the room it is strange.

Not that it changes the appearance (which I have no wish to defend !!!) they are not just speakers.....
They are "Exakt Aktiv" speakers. They are hooked up to the mains and to the DS (Linn Streamer only) via network cables.

The DS receives the data from the NAS etc, applies Drive unit correction, active crossover filtering and room correction ("space") in the digital domain. It's then fed to the "speakers" which have the DAC's (one per drive unit) on board and the power amps. I seen some, but not heard them, apparently they do sound good, perhaps best in a dark room ...LOL.
