9Designs is the Linn man around here, and has a full system fronted by a Unidisk.

A LONG time ago, I owned an LP12, and more recently I used to own a pair of Linn Kabers.

I used to have an LP12. I've still got a Majik integrated amp, and an LK100 power amp.

Yeah, I've got an LK100 with an LK1 Pre Amp, Mimik CD transport and my Sondek.

I've looked at upgrading but can't bring myself to do it, basically due to an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation cos it still sounds great.

Those unidisks are a monster purchase. Hope his mrs doesn't find the credit card statement! lol

Sold my LP12 to a mate quite a few years ago - I think he has still got it.

If there's any LP12 experts out there who'd like to venture an opinion......

MM or MC?????

Best LINN cartridge for my setup?

Best other brand suited to my setup?

There was a K18 on my LP12 but had to replace it - it was simply worn out.
I needed a cheapish, quick replacement and my local LINN dealer (www.musicalapproach.co.uk) fitted an A&R Cambridge P77 MM which are highly regarded as working well with LINN kit.

I'm after something similar to the K18 (obsolete now I Know) at least in performance but I'm spoilt for choice and don't have time to demo the whole LINN range and, TBH, can't afford some of the serious top end carts.

Many Thanks

Howdy !!!!
Local Linn fanatic here ;)

Yeah ditch the P77  The Ekos demands so much better.

MM or MC ? how deep are your pockets !!!!
Best = LINN Akiva MC Circ £1,800
or Adikt MM around £190

Though there are many carts to pick from these days, ask a few Linn dealers what they feel works best, and see what's fitted to there demo deck.

Also look for a Lingo Power Supply, then your deck is pretty much top spec, then you can start on the rest of the system ;)

When was it last serviced and set-up.... what support does it sit on ?

Hi,

Had it all rebalanced, bearing oil change, tone arm balanced, P77 fitted and new LINN belt about 2 months ago at www.musicalapproach.co.uk. The guy's name is Nigel and he's been an official LINN dealer for around 30 years. He assures me that there have been endless successes with the P77 as a budget replacement cartridge. Basically I asked for a cheap, quick temporary fix that would still sound good and not bugger up my vinyl - which to be fair is exactly what I got.

For everything (parts and labour) I got plenty of change out of £90.

At the moment (moving house soon) its sitting as pictured on my concrete floor. (please don't shout at me) as we're moving soon and I couldn't resist playing it before I've got a new table that the mrs. is happy with!! (women, can't live with em, can't kill em - lol) Its usually sat on a solid Teak coffee table type affair.

I'm still happy with the other components and love the sound of the Kans. The LK1 (so I'm told by my dealer) will sound as good as any of the new stuff (e.g. kollektor?) and has the added bonus of the MM AND MC phono stages.

I'd like a Karik upgrade at some point and the Lingo is definitely on my wish list.

My priorities at the moment are a decent rack/ table over the next few weeks when we move and a new cart.

The latter being the toughest decision. Its had an Itok LVXII arm and 3 X K9s over the years + 1 X K18 and the current P77

The P77 is a temporary measure and I'm lucky enough to have a great LINN dealer a mile from my house (see URL above) whom I know very well so I'm not worried about about making a wrong decision. I could use some views, opinions, past stories etc on good & bad carts for my current set up to simply save me some time.

The Adikt sounds good from a sensible price point of view. (is it??)

As for the: "Best = LINN Akiva MC Circ £1,800"

If my Mrs. found the bank statement for that, I expect you at my funeral standing next to my Mrs. She'll be the one covered in my blood wearing my "misters" as a brooch!! LOL

Best Regards

I have an old P77 in the cupboard, used on my 1st TT, A Dual 505….the briefly on a Axis/Basik Plus, before going to K9, then K18. The Ekos/K18 I thought was great set-up. I guess the current day version is the Adikt.

I’d look to replace the LK1 with a late spec Kairn with Switch mode supply, The LK1 with the added Dirak Supply was good…. But a later spec Karin would be way ahead, and has a very good MM/MC stage…. The Kollector was the cheaper Pre-amp anyway.

Match that to a Klout power amp and them Kans will be stunning. (The one Linn speaker I’ve not own and would like to have a play with). Until your ready for some Kabers, 2 more Klouts and some Aktiv cards. ;)

I still have my old Karik, bought it new some 12-14 years ago !!! They are good, ( guy at work borrowed it and sounded better than his new Arcam 192 !) BUT you can’t get new laser assemblies anymore. So if it develops a problem your stuck !…. Again one of the later spec (Karik 3) with SMPS is the one to get…… but check with a poorly recorded CDR as a test for disc reading ability. Or dig deeper an get an Ikemi…..

The great thing with Linn, there always something more you can do…. LOL

oh LP12 on the floor...... PMSL !!!! ;)

A lot of chaps on the PF forums rate the Mana wall stand as being very good. They went out of business earlier this year, so you'll need to find one s/h. Not cheap, but apparently well worth the dosh.

Thanks.

Got any links or pics?

Undecided on a rack for the entire system or a small rack for the separates and a table for the sondek.

Always thought the whole Mana thing was a load of over hyped B/S and it looks very agricultural.... and then they stack about 10 "stages" up

A light ridged table or wall shelf works fine. I use a "Sound Organisation" table... another excellent one was an "Audiotech".
Use one table/stand for the LP12, and a rack for the rest of the kit.

Have fun with the new Majik system.... Used it in a demo a few weeks back while checking out a Chakra C4200 running active Ninka's.
Sounded pretty good, demo room was poor sounding though.

Read mixed opinions on the player, either it's very good or harsh and aggressive.... Which suggest to me the system is not finished being run in yet... I've found the new player/Unidisks take a long run it, and go through phases of sounding good, then thin and bright, before settling down to something smooth open and very detailed. Certainly my Unidisk went through several phases.
