I am fairly comfortable with the use of Linux as a load-balancing internet proxy, but I was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions, links to guides regarding configuring a server to actually manage a cable modem itself.

I'm sure I could muddle through from what I've found on-line, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want a machine to handle routing for a local LAN then I would suggest OpenBSD rather than Linux. The firewall is the best firewall I have ever used on any operating system ever and includes all the features you need to handle routing as well.

Plus it is bullet proof. Absolutely rock solid bullet proof. It has had 2 remote code exploits in the base operating system in over 20 years. Think about that for a second. 2. In over 20 years. The Linux kernel has more than that in a year (may have exaggerated slightly but the difference in security between OpenBSD and Linux is staggering).
