I've been running openmediavault for some time now, i'm still getting used to have to use a web interface all the time so i fancied a change.

If anyone can help i'm looking for a linux build than can be ran and installed off a 8gb usb drive, preferrably with a low usage and a gui would be nice

any ideas?

The only other good open source NAS orientated system I know is FreeNAS, which is FreeBSD based rather than Debian like OMV. It's also a web based interface though. Honestly, if it's for a NAS, I don't know why you'd want anything else but FreeNAS or OMV. Just about every NAS uses a web interface, including commercially available ones (like DSM on my Synology), though it does allow SSH into it if you feel the need to do things remotely through the command line. But when you've got a web interface, why bother.

What about unRAID?

It uses a web interface too... Technically it's not open-source as you have to pay for it once you want to use more than 3 drives in your array, but at least you can test it for free for as long as you like before deciding if you like it.

I'm really impressed with it, in particular the RAID-4-alike array treatment (you get the parity of RAID5 but if you're unlucky enough to lose more than 1 disk at once you still don't lose everything because it doesn't stripe the data)... This also means it only spins up the disks it needs to access a file rather than the entire array.
