A colleague at work is struggling in getting his ATI X1900 to work with uBuntu, he says he has to choose between running 3D apps or running the fancy desktop 3D GUI.

Is that true? Are ATI Linux drivers still as shocking as they were years ago?

Has he enabled EnvyNG? If so he should be able to get that to download the correct drivers for him automagically. I'm assuming he's running Hardy Heron?

Go to synaptic package manager and search for EnvyNG, then enable EnvyNG and EnvyNG -gtk (not -qt) and apply. Then under applications->system tools he will have the EnvyNG application. If he runs that it will offer him the opportunity to install the right drivers.

I had major issues getting beryl/compiz to work alongside 3d games. Some worked ok, but Q3 just glitched to high heaven. In the end, I just assigned a hotkey to enable/disable compiz for gaming sessions.
