I would like a linux firewall box that:

1) Has a *very* low power consuption - ideally around 15W
2) Will not bankrupt me

I don't care about component age or style, I just want it to be functional. But the lower power consumption is very important to me.

Could anyone spare the time for some advice?

[ps - I would also very much appreciate any info sources on power consumption/efficiency]

I've got a Mini-ITX box doing just this. Via EPIA PD6000E.

Cost me a few hundred, but I'd imagine something similar could be had second hand. From some tests I read a few weeks back, it uses about 15W.

Thank you for the fast reply. I was just looking at the VIA homepage actually... :D I'm a little sketchy about how to put the fairly recent really small PCs together but I guess i'm going to have to work it out sometime.

There's not much difference - it's just a bit more fiddly. Mine was a bundle that included the motherboard/processor/case already assembled. All I did was drop in some RAM and a 2.5inch HDD, hooked it up to a CD drive and installed IPCop.

Currently running pfsense (www.pfsense.com), and it's pretty good.

Thanks for the firewall recommendation. I'm not a great fan of auction sites (things usually go bad for me if they can ^.^ ) so I think I might stretch it to a couple of hundred - i'll look around.
