I'm not that familiar with Linux but have tried Ubuntu a couple of time on a Live CD and can easily use it. I'm looking for the best Linux 'version' to use that is user friendly and not overly complicated. I've seen a couple of threads mentioning Mint. I've heard that Ubuntu now has ads (why??). I'm looking for one that isnt the same as Windows but isnt entirely different.

How are you going to be running it?
I have fedora running in VirtualBox but use RedHat on UNIX worksations at work.
As they are free it makes sense to try them and choose the one you prefer, you could have more than one if running virtual machines and ditch the ones you dislike.

I'm a complete noob to Linux and just started using Crunchbang due to running it on an old Celeron with 1Gb of RAM. I have to say I've found it incredibly easy to use and install. I've stared using the terminal now too as the beginners guide on their site talks you through basic commands. I'd definately recommend it.

I wouldn't say I'm a complete Linux newbie as I've used it on and off over the years but recently installed Crunchbang in place of Windows. So far I'm finding it brilliant, I'd say its slightly more complex than Ubuntu etc but not quite as scary as Arch for a newbie.
