Linux for the ps3

If your just starting out the best distribution to try is Yellow Dog Linux 6, its the most feature complete out of the box and is the semi-official distribution for the PS3. You can use others such as Gentoo but YDL is without doubt the easiest to set up.
Don't expect to be able to use it to play back HD video files such as .mkv's - due to the nature of the way the ability to run Linux is implemented it means there is no hardware decoding support at present.
Realistically theres not much more to it than basic desktop use at the moment.
