Linux from a USB external HDD?

Ok I have formatted the external HDD and installed it. Now when I boot the PC it posts and says "OS not found" and hangs there. Any ideas?

I assume the BIOS is set to boot from the USB drive?

If so, then there's probably an easy way of repairing it from the Ubuntu CD, but it's not something I've done.

Download the Super Grub Disk ISO and burn it to CD. You should be able to boot from it and repair or reinstall Grub. Remember to disconnect any internal drives to avoid any problems.

I have managed to install Linux Mint and it is up and running, so yay! Thanks for all the help. However, I cannot get my wireless network (and therefore internet) working. It recognizes my wireless card and drivers, and I had it working once on the live CD. I click on the icon to connect to my network (which it recognizes with good signal strength) and it asks me for the WEP code which I type in correctly, but it never connects.

Good stuff about Mint.

Sadly I've no experience of wireless on either linux or Windows, so I'll be of no help to you. Try the Ubuntu forums or Mint forums for a quicker answer that you'll probably get here.

The distro forums are a wealth of information for new linux users.

Fair enough. I have actually had boot problems with both Windows and Mint after plugging back in my SATA, so have given up for now! Cheers for the help.

Windows is fine as long as I set the SATA HDD to 1st in the priority list, if not it hangs after post. Mint gets to the "loading" screen then comes up with a DOS-like screen which I have no idea of what it means! Think I may leave it until my very Linux minded mate finishes an essay and has time to give me a hand!

Does Mint come to a command line?

If so try entering
Code:
startx
to see if it starts the X server and the GUI.
