Linux from USB

I am a total linux noob.
I have heard you can run linux from a cd/usb stick without installing it.
Can someone point to where i can get this? I assume its free?

edit: if you just want to use a CD (probably easiest way, but can't easily save changes/have persistent files) then look here

If you are a total noob then just get the ubuntu live CD, just don't be put off by the colour scheme.

Fedora core 9 is really easy to install on USB

Try this site I used it to setup a version of linux that ran from a micro-sd card which is the same as using a pen drive http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ hope that helps you somewhat
