My PC HDD just corrupt. Stuck in the Ubuntu 5.10 64bit live CD i had in and i am away again untill i can be bothered to fix my pc.

I've got msn (gaim), firefox, an office suite.

Excellent in my opinion. In fact i will be downloading the latest linux when i get my PC up and running fully again with windows.

I only wish there was more cross compatibility support with linux and windows, then i would use linux all the time.

Would it be true in saying that i cannot get virus' and stuff because i am running from a live cd (i have disconnected my HDD), and surely there arent that many Linux virus'?

Also is there a hotkey to switch between the different desktop screens?

Thanks.

Everything's run between your cd drive and your RAM, so no permanent changes (such as a virus) can be made with no hdd attached.

And System>Prefs>Keyboard shortcuts.

What about a temporary virus, or spyware? Hoping to do some internet shopping over the coming days.

EDIT: and thanks for the shortcuts thing

For all practical purposes there aren't any Linux viruses and there certainly isn't any spyware for the platform.

Please, everybody, don't let this thread dissolve into what every mac-virus thread becomes.

So would you not need to run any antispyware/antivirus/firewall software for linux.

I find that quite interesting and is prompting me to move all my 'other' pc's to something like ubuntu and it makes it easier as it means i wont need extra software for my download box i am creating.

Thanks for responses.

EDIT:

Also were you just referring to the situation, or would it be the same if i installed linux to the harddrive.

Thanks for your responses btw. I am thinking of putting this on a usb pen drive for a totally passive and static machine.

I do run Linux. I'm posting this from Ubuntu 6.10. I don't run any sort of antivirus. The OS takes care of any firewalling/port closing for me. There are a couple antiviruses for Linux but their purpose is to scan to make sure you don't have any Windows viruses you might accidentally spread to friends or colleagues.

Ah ok, yeah i was wondering about that when i was googling.

I am running off a CD now and it seems nippy (considering). I was just wondering, whether i would notice much of a difference running of a pen drive (live or installed). I don't really know about the speeds of the CD read etc.

I have posted in the optical section of the forums, so if you can't answer.

should be (a lot) quicker of a usb2 pen drive, although pen drives use to get slower after i think about 1,000 read / writes not sure if this is still the case.

You could install to your new harddisk when you get it, just leave some unformated space for linux when installing windows.

I have heard that the Corsair Voyager pen drives are pretty fast and have a something like a10 year warranty, so i was thinking of getting one of those.

What about SD cards. Do they slow down. Would a "super fast" one be upto the same speed as usb drives?

What would you recommend as the lowest spec for something like ubuntu?

EDIT: love it, saving all my documents to google lol...its great.

re: lowest spec for ubuntu
really depends on how much eye candy you want to run with, but for it to be reasonable nippy still P3 733 256/512mb ram would be more than enough.

Nvidia graphics cards are the best supported in linux, so one of those would be a must if you want compiz/beryl type stuff, also fater cpu.

memory card wise if it's connected by usb2 don't think it would make any differance, should be able to install it on a 4gb one i would have thought.

Well to be honest. I dont need any eye candy. Its just a download box.

I have already asked about this in a previous thread about how the logistics of it works, so thats sorted. I just need the minimum sort of spec i can get.

EDIT:

Also is it possible to save the live settings if i stick it on a pen drive?

The amount of end users using Linux is relativity very low. If you were some who writes Viruses or spyware you would make it most effective by having it run on the OS that the clear majority uses. In other words you don't have to worry about viruses or spyware... As for you firewall Ubuntu and most other good Linux distros have a firewall built in called iptables.

Also if you want another option of a Linux distro that is small. say to fit on a USB drive, DSL (Damn Small Linux) speaks for itself. If you are running from a Pen drive it is no longer a "Live" somethign , so your changes will be saved. Although I dont really see why you could just partition you hard drive to include Ubuntu, it would run A LOT faster. Also go with the 32bit version not the 64.

I personally use Arch Linux, optimised for the i686 platform so it runs faster.

also the way linux is setup with the root and user based system makes it very hard for virii to do any damage.

i'm actually trying to figure out arch atm, but having problems. don't want to hijack the thread but i'll probably start a thread tomorrow when i'm less tired.

If you mean to switch between workspaces, then by default it is CTRL+ALT and the cursor keys (you can stack workspaces 3x3, 4x1 etc. so can move in all directions).

To move the focused application across workspaces, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT and the cursor keys in the direction you desire.

Have you ever heard of WINE and Cedega? With those two you can run loads of Windows apps in Linux- MS Office, Photochop, most games, tons of stuff :)

Would it not run them all "slower" than they would run in windows as for things like games, i couldnt cope with that as i dont have the fastest machine anyways.

Ok, yeah i understand the top bit, but surely there are some virus' out there to catch *** linux user that thinks liek that?

Also, what i meant is, create a Live USB stick with set settings, so that when my computer goes balls up again, I can just stick the usb drive in and i wont have to keep choosing the settings when i boot it.

Also surely 64-bit would be faster?
