I'm starting to get back into Linux and wondered if anybody had any ideas for little mini-projects that I could take on to further my knowledge.

So far I've done the likes of: setting up a CHAOS cluster, setting up LAMP, got TorrentFlux up and running, taught myself Perl and coded a simple portscanner, set up a gateway/router box, set up Snort and made a simple honeypot etc.

So any ideas branching off from those, or indeed completely unrelated would be appreciated.

(Actually already thought of my next one writing this out, RainbowTables on CHAOS)

Cheers,

How about a cheap PVR using something like MythTV?

Although judging by what you've accomplished so far, this should be a walk in the park for you ;)

slight OT how do you find CHAOS as an everday os?

What made you choose that over say CENTOS?

TIA
Deano

Cheers,

Thats not a bad idea really - distributed rainbow tables. However it certainly won't be a trivial task.

Cracking hashes of course ;) I know all the common sets can be found online through the likes of plain-text.info but people are still looking for the more peculiar character sets (plain-text being an example). But I'd only be doing it just so I could have the experience of getting a distributed system up and running with a quite complex task to deal with.

Didn't use it apart from setting up the cluster because of it's limited default package set. As soon as I had openMosix functioning properly and munching through some code provided by a friend I left it at that to be honest, have yet to set up my own Distributed File System etc. Generating tables on a cluster, as Una said, should provide me with a bit more food for thought :)

Ideally I'd like to have a USB hard drive, plug that in to a PC in a lab in Uni and have it as the store for all generated tables, then just boot CHAOS from the CD on as many nodes as I can get my hands on and get it munching away.

Ideas still welcomed, and indeed if anyone wants to spare a hand with the RT, get in touch :)

Yeah I looked at MythTV when the Systm took a look at it, would be a good little project, but not really something I could put on my CV. Might give that episode another watch and see if it entices me ;)

Do you program in any languages? You might be of service to the community-driven open source project of your choice. Automatix is written Perl if you'd like to hone your skills there. You could definitely put something like that on your CV:)
