I have come up against a huge problem after trying to upgrade Linux Hardy Heron to Karmic Koala. I dual boot with W7 and the above on two separate drives - drive C: and a slave drive that is or was partitioned into two. 300 gig plain storage and 200gig for Linux. Things didn't go straight from the beginning as Linux kept trying to install on the C: drive. Anyway got over that and the install then went without a hitch. However, on completion all I got was a black screen with the grub prompt. However, I have had this before so knew to put in the live CD and open up "terminal" from there I entered the following
sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

To my horror all I got then was error 15 file not found.

I have used my WINPE disk to get onto the system to look around. The slave drive is now no longer visible so I can only assume that the install wiped the 300 gig of storage and used all the drive as an install (I have a backup copy of the storage so not the end of the world)

I have restored the MBR from my Acronis backup but it has made no difference, whatever I do I cannot get past the grub prompt. My Windows install is still all there but can't access it - help anyone!

Finally got Windows back by using the command prompt from the Windows install DVD and repaired the MBR that way. When I did get back up and running it was as I feared, the Linux install had completely wiped the partition of my backups and took the whole drive for itself.

I have wiped everything clean using disk director and created two partitions again and I'm now in the midst of copying everything back to that partition.

When I installed Hardy Heron a couple of years ago the install went like clockwork. If Karmic Koala is supposed to be progress then Linux is in for a bleak time. They are hoping to get more Linux users with this release but on this performance I don't think I'll be bothering again. When I compare this install with the ease and sophistication of Windows 7 last week there really is no contest. How on earth the average Joe is supposed to be able to install this distro is beyond my comprehension.

You can update to Karmic directly from within Heron. Why the complete reinstall?

Try this for your next test: Install ubuntu on to your system as the only OS. and then try and install windows 7. Let us know how easy that is for you.
